Mystery dots...ghosts dots, etc.
« on: March 18, 2000, 11:34:00 AM »
It was brought up by someone in the arena today about ghost dots and when would HTC do something about them.  Well, ht said he had not heard anything about them.  So, how many people have seen dots that are not actually cons, and what were the circumstances?  I have seen several.  Most common ones seem to appear as normal from a distance.  No way the dot could be a friendly due to dar info etc.  As I close on the dot, no icon ever appears, and I zoom past it.  Dot seems to diappear, only to have it reappear as I leave the area.  Also, have chased one for like 15 mins to have it appear to dive in ground, no icon ever appeared.  I tried to film one.  The dot was there while flying, not on the film.  Anyone else see similar occurances?

I saw one the other night and began a pursuit.  There actually was a con on radar in the direction, so I kept chasing it.  Then I realized that the con on radar was a full sector away, and that I was chasing a phantom.

I saw one a long time ago, early on in the beta, W of F22, would chase it and get close, but no icon would appear. I seen that particular dot on 3 occasions always W of F22. Then today before capturing F7, I noticed a dot about 300 yards N of the runway, I dove to check it out, just as the acks came back up! Dot was just sitting there not moving.
BTW I managed to escape the acks! First time for everything I guess

The only wierd stuff I've seen is when flying bombers and in a gun position, I see what I think might be a dot but ends up being part of the gunsight, like the whole physical sight is not there.  Never seen/chased a ghost tho.

How close to the dot do you get before it disappears?

See them quite regularly. I dont think that it is that bad. A little bit of randomness is good for the game.

I see them pretty regularly also, but always on the deck.  There have been plenty of times I've blown alt to drop down and investigate dot to see if it's a gooney bird or low level 26 trying to sneak in somewhere.  I've seen them just about everywhere... on top of mtns, on the sides of the mtns, on airfields.

The other ghost dots I've seen have been when I was riding as a gunner on a bomber.  There is a ghost dot that will follow the bomber around, and zoom around to stay behind it when it turns.  then it just swings back and forth, from 5 to 7.

I see them all the time on the deck. Last night saw one above the horizon and thought the nits were trying to sneak in a 47. As I sharted to chase it started to drop, thinking to myself "oh boy get to shoot at somthing that can't shoot back hehe". After about a four minute chase at 350 ias the dot seemed to slowly sink to the ground and vanish.

Like I said, they're are UFO's, I mean they move fast and in all directions, they sink into the ground, they disappear, I mean it's aliens man.

I saw one once in 1.0 and reported it here.  We pretty much decided it was a plane that had been discoed and the server hadn't realized it yet.  (Similar to when after a disco, you log back on quickly to find a plane with your name hanging in the air exactly where you were when you got discoed.  BTW: Don't shoot at it,   you will kill yourself.)  The time I saw the "ghost dot" I was flying near one of our bases that was under heavy attack.  I saw a low dot and thinking it was a c47, I dove down to shoot at it.  When I got close it seemed to go straight up.  As I passed it went back down.  One more time I tried for it, but again it went straight up as I approached it.

I think that discoes are a good explaination for these dots, because I know that occasionally I get booted by my ISP and the AH score page does not show that I had been discoed.

I see em on the ground quite frequently and drop down to investigate every time 'cause ya never know. Pain in the butt to blow alt and get back up. Strafed one once with no effect.
