Oil starvation (bug or new feature?)
« on: August 23, 2004, 03:04:10 AM »
I don't know if this has been changed since AH1 or if it's a bug, but here goes.

Oil leak damage is incurred in combat. I watch the oil pressure and monitor my engine temperature.
When oil pressure reaches zero I turn off my engine to allow engine to cool before engine seizes.

I glide until engine cools way down. Well below the yellow zone.
Restart engine and run it until engine temp approaches yellow zone. Shut it off and let it cool again. Repeat as necessary to nurse oil leak damage back to base.

Here's the problem:
In AH1 the engine would never seize up as long as you kept engine temp out of the danger zone in temperature.
Now it seems engine will seize when oil pressure reaches zero no matter how cool the engine is.

Bug or new oil damage model?

As it should, as soon as you have no oil pressure the engine should sieze regardless of engine temperature

Not true. Seizure is the eventual result of loss of oil pressure, not the immediate result.

And, temperature is indeed one of the factors involved.

SunD: It probably also is reflecting the fact you no longer have oil to run your engine ~ resulting in your engine siezing.  Those high performance engines require lots of oil to run properly to lubercate the valves, cams, and pistons.  Basically, running an engine out of oil and restarting it til it heats up will not guarentee it won't seize.

Wheather the engine is on or off doesnt make any difference. As long as the prop is spinning its gonna be turning an oil pump. When all the oil that is used to create all the hydralic bearings in the engine is gone, the engine should shortly freeze there after if not before.

In the event of a busted block or oil pan your just crap outta luck.
