Night Time flying
« on: September 14, 2004, 08:59:06 AM »
In the Main discussion board there is a post for Night time flying to bring it back!!!!!!!!

I think we need to bing it in to the CT and have night time flying..

In WW2 there was alot of night time flying and our goal is to simulate the actual Theaters anf combat scenario's. Bring This realism to the CT.... Maybe an actual hours worth of Night time flying in a days rotation...

But add some night time flying..

Heres a link to the post in the general Board and it has pictures of night flying with the visual effects too....

I think a better idea would be for someone to set up a Thursday night mission to replicate a night event. There were lots of night raids and stuff that we could do.

All in all I think nighttime appeals to a minority of players.  I think that if we brought night to the CT on a regular basis it would just result in frustrated players who cannot find anyone to fight.

The only real alternative is a thursday night "night mission" even then I have the same issues, should be impose the night upon the players not in the mission?  If you're tooling along in your fighter looking for or in a furball and all of a sudden the powers that be turn the lights off?

I feel I should also add that as a player I dislike the night.  Once the novelty wore off I usually logged when dusk/dawn set in.  Part of the reason is I'm colorblind and I couldn't see icons against the dawn/dusk sky.
80th FS "Headhunters"
I blame mir.

Me, too.  The notion of WWII planes dogfighting in the dark is....um....not highly realistic.

Until AI, or some similar version, is put into AH (AI = Airborne Intercept), night fighting = retarded. Fighters did NOT do missions at night. NIGHT FIGHTERS did. We don't have night fighters, nor do we have anything but literally pitch black screens. We cannot see the ground for the sky, let alone the millions upon millions of subtle shades that the human eye can pick up (and that the computer monitor can NOT replicate).

Night is just an excuse to run night bombing missions.... which ultimately fail because the bombers can't see s*** to bomb it, and the poor saps who up in mossies or 110Gs in the hopes of a sweet night fighter kill can't see the bombers even if they were told on what alt they were flying, what heading, and at what speed (instead of our "dot" radar system).

I was really happy when AH changed the default "night" to be an instant sunset/sunrise. Every time, without fail, that it went night, I left. Simple as that. Even dawn/dusk is horrible because of the way AH2 colors show up. In AH1 it was much easier. In AH2 it sucks big time.

Just an unofficial vote AGAINST night time, and my reasoning behind it.

A year or so ago we still had night time in the CT, but on a squad night the whole arena asked the CM on duty(Jester) to do away with it. Many got disoriented, crashed trying to land, etc. That was pretty much the end of night time in the CT. If this is a popular idea, you might want to try it first. Night flying is a whole different animal.

Yeah... One you can't see.. and that kills you rather quickly, and makes you crash, and keeps you from landing safely....

LOL if they could model in moonlight, and search lights over cities, and glows around bases, and maybe runway lights that only show up to people on that team, and some other little navigation aids, it might be interesting. As it stands, it is not interesting :D

OK!!!!!!!!!!
This is cool....

We are not shooting it completely down... We need to make a list of things for HTC to do to make Night fighing and flying better..

Spot lights in towns and on fields..
Night fighter versions of planes...

Lets get a list
:)

Not that I'm completly opposed to night flying, there are times when it has it's appeal.  However the fun and excitement wears off quickly and I usually find myself wanting to log off...  I think it's a feature best left for the special events arena...

Koot,

Not trying to burst your bubble, but if HTC agrees, they'll tell you it'll take two weeks. In reality it woud be more like a year and two weeks. I do like the idea of designing the arena for night ops with those modifications.

I was **NOT** making a list of suggestions.

I think night fighting will NEVER be a viable aspect of AH2 (or AH3, or AH4) nor will it EVER be realistically replicated, nor will anybody stomach it for more than 20 minutes before any and every server empties completely.

I was giving reasons (few and not even the BEST reasons) why it should NOT be enabled, is all.

If night flying is brought back, the first change would have to be cockpit instrument lights. My biggest issue with the old system was the limited visibility inside the cockpit of any aircraft if you were not flying in a direction generally away from the moon. After all, night flying IS instrument flying and if you can't read your instruments half the time, you're going to wind up dead.

Second, some form of support would have to be developed for true night fighters like the 110 and Black Widow. Although it is very true that night dogfights were uncommon, night bomber intercepts were a huge factor particularly in the ETO. Just my two cents.

I enjoyed the Night fighting i would like to see instrument lights in the aircraft if even for show. I never adjusted my gamma and could see very well during night fights. Koot I'll see if i can host a HTH night fight and see if we can get Taxi, Phaser, and the rest of us crazy buggers in there and really see if it is a hoot or not.
