Go to http://www.panicware.com

downloads.

they have a free spyware search and destroy program.

Looks a lot better than ad-aware imo, it found a lot of stuff in my system that adaware didnt.

What you think? Or can you reccommend a better one? :)

I do not know of any that will cover all the Spyware/Malware stuff.  I can say, with some level of certainty, that it usually takes two programs (at least) to cover it and that will still miss stuff.

I have not used a program like these in quite some time.  I took another approach and adjusted the security in IE a few months back and have not had so much as a bad cookie show up.

Using spybot along with adaware is a good match.

I am sorry.  I did not do a decent job answering that.  Starbird is right.  You will never find one progrm to handle it all due to different ways they programs approaches the problems.

I agree, I use 3 different ones.

Ad-aware, spy sweeper, and spybot.

IE is fine, IF you take the time to alter the defaults for it, you can make it just as secure as Firefox or others, which, by the way, had a recent security hole or two as well.

I have never had a popup, or gotten any spyware/malware since tweaking IE and I know a few sites that are loaded with that garbage.

NOTE: The following is not a recommendation.  It is my personal preferences.  If you chose to use them, it is your choice.

First, go into the "Tools", then "Internet Options" (IE 6.x and later, but most apply to IE 5.x as well) and select the "Security" tab.
Then select the "Internet" zone (make sure you have all the security updates from Microsoft, by the way).
Now, go through and disable everything, and I mean everything.  Where 'disable' is not an option, set it to "High".  After doing that, save it.

Now pick each of the remaining zones and reset them to "Default".

Now, pick the "Privacy" tab from the "Internet Options" menu.  Press the "Advanced" button, and set the options to allow first party cookies, but disallow third party cookies and uncheck the "Always allow session cookies" option.

You are done.  Now, to make things work normally, for sites you trust, like ours.  You will need to add '*.hitechcreations.com' and '*.flyaceshigh.com' to your "Trusted" sites zone in IE's 'Internet options", under the "Security" tab.
You might as well add '*.microsoft.com' as well, so updates can work.
You will need to uncheck the "Require server verification" option in the "Trusted sites" panel.

For any site you trust, just add them to the "Trusted sites" zone.  Take note of what zone IE is using at sites (look in the lower right corner of IE).  It might take a while to get all your trusted sites added, but once done, you never have to worry about it again.
A tip:  Any site requiring input from you will need to be listed in the "Trusted sites" list in order to work.

If you need to do a file download, you will beed to set "File downloads" back to "Enabled" in the security options.  Just remember to set it back after you are done.

Side note:  People will say just use another browser instead.  The reason the other browsers have not been as effected by these problems is the lack of support for many features IE supports.  As they add support, they have been getting plagued by security problems as well.
For some people it seems to be a religious issue more than a technical one, while for others, it is just a lack of trying to setup IE correctly that has prompted them to move to another browser.
All the latter are doing is putting off the inevitable.

Actually the best program to have on your PC is hijack this...

It's not a spybot per se but what it does is manage your registry better than anything I've ever seen. You need to be careful with it since its very powerful and not all that "user friendly"...but its easily the best utility out there to keep your system clean...

Also spybot "search & destroy" is a great program...

Usually if I build out a system for someone I'll load AVG virus and those 2...never had anyone using them come up with a problem if they keep em current...all shareware/freeware.

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers real-time protection from spyware installation attempts.
Ad-Aware
Spybot

To protect yourself further:
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free Google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete your Temp folders regularly. Use CleanUp! to do this automatically for you!

ALL FREE !!!
