Don't forget that you can reassign the staff (retinue?) from one general to another when they are in the same army.  My first leader was loaded and I redistributed them to the younger generals when he hit 60 and then secured him back in the capitol city to enjoy his semi-retirement.

HOOOO what a game!  I'm in the process of exterminating the Gauls, myself.  City management is a piece of cake, if you know how to interperet the city summary menu (the one which breaks down your profit, happiness, and growth into + and - %).

I'm having marathon gaming sessions again, and it feels great.

Thanks for the tip on the retinue, didn't know that!

I cant get the game to run, it loads ok but then when I try to run it I get a wrong CD message.

Reloaded and no joy.  Went to the website and hit the tech forums and it has to do with the cd key.

Any suggestions ?

Strange as the game dosn't require any key to play other then asking for CD Disc 1 to be in the drive when you start it up. There might be an executionable crack out by now to bypass the CD check. I haven't had a look yet as too busy killing and being killed by Egyptians at the moment.

One complaint I had of RTW was that the battles are to fast. Infantry moved to fast overrunning your skirmishes before they even had time for a 2nd volly. Plus overall the battles were over in a few mins leaving you little time to make adjustments.

With this adjustment to the file below, now the battles are at a more realistic pace. Appears to work very well.

Found this in another forum. Backup the original .txt file it's in the RTW\DATA folder.

descr_battle_map_movement_mod ifiers.txt

and replace it with a .txt file of the same name containing this.

How To Get Rid Of Battle Time Limits

Info from another forum on how to get rid of the timmer on battles. This txt has to be added to the top of the list in the preferences.txt otherwise it dosn't work.

...-Gixer

" preferences.txt " file in the main directory

NO_CAMPAIGN_BATTLE_TIME_LIMIT:TRUE

is the key that can be added to remove the time limit, BUT
and it is big but - the developers hate us, once you start a campaign the program checks for this flag and ... erases it as if it is not a real command. But it is. So here is a real solution, start the campaign, then ALT-TAB out of the program then edit in that flag into the preferences file and save it, tab back into the game - enjoy no time limit. This fix will work from turn to turn but you might have to reaply it every time you restart the game. If anyone come up with a better way - I am all ears.

Yes you can build flamming pigs as any of the Roman Factions. Hilarious to watch the Elephants run amoke amongst their own troops.

Now playing as the Selecuids, seem to be very powerful and using Elephants is a blast. Especially sending them through the gates of an enemy city first and watching them maul enemy infantry against the buildings.

Anyone else getting long pauses on the battle map?
« Reply #42 on: September 30, 2004, 06:47:13 AM »
Just wondering because I started playing through the introduction campaign last night and in there I get many, many pauses in gameplay while in battle.

Athlon64 3200+
1GB DDR400
Gigabyte K8N Pro
40GB ATA133
Ti4400 128MB
DX9.0c
WinXP Pro SP2

If someone wants to look over the DxDiag I can send it later tonight.

What screen resolution are you running at and do you still get pauses when cranking down all the eye candy for the battles and/or playing at lower resolutions?

Try uninstalling Windows XP SP2 update, it will revert back to SP1.

I uninstalled SP2 because after less than 15 minutes of flight in FS2004, the game began loading so much when looking around that it was unplayable.
If it could be called loading, it was as if memory was lagging or something and even sounds were stuttering while it tried to load the textures - SLOOOOOOW..
After uninstall, it was back to normal.

Apparently many others are having similar problems with SP2+FS2004 and wouldn't surprise me at all if there are problems with other games.
Some games ran fine though.

SP2 is teh evil
