Forum Suggestion "RESEARCH"
« on: October 15, 2004, 02:38:00 PM »
I know alot of folks who play this game are passionate about aircraft. Some work on them, some fly them. Some might have had a family member who flew, and some just like the ww2 warbirds.

But of the folks that play this game, I am sure there is an incredible amount of information that is possessed that could be shared by players.

It would be like our own player based Aces High Library.
A place where no arguments would occur - the only posting would be of pictures, articles, color profiles, data , technical drawings, ect...

Make a sticky of a plane (or a plane series) - If you come across something or have something to share - Post it in the thread. Soon, whenever you need some plane information or a good read - you could just pull up the old "research" forum and check out a thread.

A wiki would probably work pretty good as a library.

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiWikiWeb

Just need some webspace for it.

about the only thing I don't like about the wikis is that people can change information.

Waffle,
this would be an excellent idea if the powers to be would implement it, and as you said if it is on the message boards have a sticky for each plane that we could openly add data to

or make a webpage with upload feature to make a "Library of WW2 info" as you have put it
"When one considers just what they should say to a new pilot who is logging in Aces High, the mind becomes confused in the complex maze of info it is necessary for the new player to know. All of it is important; most of it vital; and all of it just too much for one brain to absorb in 1-2 lessons" TC

A lot of what you may want may be possible with just a good forum system which allows attachments since I assume you'll have some dedicated librarians to manage the content.

There is also a lot to be said for a CMS which lets you keep image galleries, links databases, etc. all neatly organized. Some forum systems these days also have portal-like add-ons which may also be worth looking at.

If you can be more precise about what features you want I can look around what's out there in open-source.

If there is enough interest, I'd be happy to set up a site with:
uploadable galleries w/ thumbnails
file uploading
a forum
private messenging
browser-based email addresses

A dormant squad site (which will no longer be used) is currently hosted, but you can see a sample of some of the features.

I was thinking of someplace that you could post scans from manuals / technical documents as well as articles / flight test reports...pictures, video - anything under the sun that pertains to an aircraft in a historical/technical way.

Wasn't thinking so much as historical stories, unless it was dealing with flight charateristics, but more along the lines of the mechanical side of the aircraft. 3-views / cutaways, tech docs/manuals...ect...

I keep the picture hanger full with all the photos I post on the forums here.

I keep having to delete photos to add more :)

Needless to say there are lots of folks who are doing this and contributing information.
