I've done CV-landings with all navy-planes and also in Lanc,G-10 and couple other.
And take-offs too...

Ok, I must just suck. I can now complete CV landings in the F6F5 and the TBM with the hook down with no problems.

I think I was going too fast before.

I can't get the hook down (shift-G)...no hook visible, no light...anyone else having this problem?

Andy, you may have to set it up in the keyboard set up thingie. Mine was blank and had to fill in the hook command.

I was getting surprised at instant deaths when smoothly touching down on the CV with the tailhook extended and discovered that these "deaths" are caused by too much speed at touchdown. It seems that 120mph is about the maximum speed that you can use with the tailhook extended.

It's too bad that catching the wire too fast doesn't just rip off the rear fuselage of the aircraft and let you go tumbling forward across the deck of the ship before you die. I really like the WarBirds feature that shows you a brief external view of what is happening to the aircraft as you die.

The odd thing here is the apparent significance of touchdown sink rate. Most folks seem to think that a 'grease job' (minimum sink rate) is the key to success in this sim.

Why is that odd? Because that is exactly opposite of real life. There's a lot of truth to the old joke about 'Navy landings'! When 'Paddles' gave the cut, that's exactly what the pilot did...cut the power. The aircraft then sank on to the deck...and not too gently!

Well Fellas,

I CQ'd in the F6F yesterday. (That's Carrier Qualified for my non-naval friends).

I had to bolter (thats Go Around for you AAC types) because the skipper decided to do a full left rudder turn while i was in the groove.

Anyway...I was successful on first attempt and if I can help anyone here is what I did...

Full flaps, Hook down Wheels down (DONT FORGET THE HOOK..or the wheels), 125kts, nose slightly high, power setting necessary to maintain sink rate, chop power over the fantail. It was no where near as hard as I thought.

By the way, practice spot landings on the airbase...this can get ya ready.

If anyone wants to go and shoot some carrier approaches with me call me in the air...callsign streek, RW equipped.

PS....your touchdown speed will be about 100kt IAS. (Of course your speed over the wires will be less because of the speed of the CV)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, I think alot of Warbird pilots have a difficult time re-learning CV landings, I play WB's HTH, and I can assure you one can kind of 'slam' the hook down, it allows alot more room for error...in AH, as in real life, everything must be precise. I've done more wave offs than I ever did in WB's...in WB CV landings, if approach was to high, I can 'stall' the plane into a landing, hard bounce, hook grabs,....not so in AH.

No problems with landing any A/C here, except the F6F...I've yet to make a successful landing in the F6F, but I think I know what my problem is..too much speed, too fast of a descent.

I made several traps last night in the TBM.
Easy plane to bring aboard ship. (just don't stall it low!!)

Only problem I have had in making carrier
landings has been the visibility over the nose in the F4U.

I HAVE landed the F4U successfuly, but I have had more bolters in that one. Last night I tried the curving approach to final.
Works great! Thats what the real ones had to do.

i had trouble too - especially with visibility in the hogs...

i fixed it by keeping the front of the carrier in view instead of the back on approach. i aim the top of the cowling ahead of the wires rather that at them - so instead of having to flare and catch them you settle down nicely on them. this assures you will hit the deck at least instead of coming in too low and plowing into the stern. as i get close the deck comes into view and i just plop it down, full flaps right at about 100 mph with a little throttle to keep the sink rate ok- it keeps you flatter rather than dipping the nose during the last few seconds and throwin your speed off.

in the f6f it isnt as necessary - i look right at the wires due to good viz and the only trick is timing your flare so you catch just right

as for the seafire

1. pray

2. hold breath!

3. close eyes

the recommended speed for landing is around 120 but seem to be able to land anything if i get it down to 100 or less - stalling has never been a problem so long as you keep the throttle in-

grizz would u mail them to me ? or put them up again ? Our newer air's in AH are going to do traps this weekend .
