Bat look close and you can see the f4f's canopy pulled back and the pilot trying to shield himself from the heat, as he trys to get out.

Question:  When bailing out, how easy was it to avoid striking the tail?  How easy was it to bail out?

You flipped the plane upside down for bailing -> gravity did the job for you.

On bailing.

I was under the impression that this is/was a well used procedure:

Open canopy.
Loosen harness, belt or whatever.
Put the plane in shallow climb.
Trim plane full down/forward, and pull hard on stick to keep same attitude as before trim.
Let go of stick, and pretty much eject out of cockpit.

I was a bit vague in the opening line;) I know for a fact this is and was a procedure to bail.

Some pilots were killed by striking the tail.  This is how Hans-Joachim Marseille died.  He was bailing out after an engine malfuction was causing power loss and fumes in the cockpit of his Bf109G-2.
