When the Internet comes out and touches your real life.
« on: January 29, 2005, 08:53:38 PM »
A post here today just made me think about something, and wonder. How many of you have had your real actual physical lives touched by the internet?

Here's a few I can think of:

I was a CM and there was some trouble with a scenario (I forget what, exactly). Daddog, the head CM calls me at home... but I'm totally shrecking HIGH when it happens. The conversation seemed to last an hour, and consisted of me trying to have him not worry, and convince him that everything would work out. But again, I was totally shrecking high. I have no idea how it came off. (Sorry Daddog!)

Next one... Yer gonna laff...

When I first got jacked into the internet, it was via AOL circa 1995. I went kinda bat5hit. I would spend too much time goofin' in the chat things. It was a fun new way to communicate. Then this chick wants to call me. Okay fine. Then she calls again. And again. And again. Then one day I get home from work and there's a package. She had sent me a pair of drumsticks with my name engraved on them. I go online, she's there, and she tells me she just bought a plane ticket to New York, would be there by the weekend.

I didn't type a single thing to her ever again after seeing that one sentence appear on my screen. Don't know if she ever came, or what.

Another was when Pyro called me at work during a meeting.

Funked, the designated side CO for some big scenario, blew a sort of hissy-fit - can't remember why - and quit. And it was well into the planning phase.

There's maybe only 5-6 people at this meeting.

"Yeah, that's okay, I can take the call."

"Oh hey Pyro" (he said "This is Pyro").

"Funked, yeah, he is gone - but it's okay."

"Well no, no.... I wouldn't say that. A bit of an exageration. It'll settle down."

The rest of the conversation revolved around some form of BS internet psychology and momentum. Lolz. I forgot I was even in the room. The look on those guys' faces when I put down the phone....

I did meet one quadmate in real life and he was really a great guy, so it's not all nightmares.

But okay... Besides meeting squadmates or the cons, or internet shopping etc., has the internet ever stepped out of the monitor at ya?

dont want to derail this, but..

Before the internet I get this chick tellemarketer call me at home....back when I would actually answer the phone.

She's trying to sell family portraits.....I told her I had a badly difigured head, but would be interested is she could somehow do the portait and make it fit as the backdrop to my fishtank. She laughed

Anyway, told her where I worked.

She shows up 3 days later with a kid and the mess that was her life and.....well, was very sad situation.

i think the time i went and met up with dinger, funked, fdski, and the rest of the 308th in Dayton was the first time i'd actually met people I had only ever seen online.

Had a friendship with a girl for the longest time on the net and finally met her, and she was pretty neat... until i helped her drive from minneapolis to la and she was a total psycho. Learned my lesson there!

Well, I'm Tubgirl so I'm pretty sure we all know how the internet has touched my life.  I'll never forgive my ex-boyfriend (known here as Nuke) for publishing that picture.  It was a very private thing for our first anniversary.

I started doin the AOL thing when i was 18.  I met these two girls...both pretty good looking....anyhow went over to their apartment and my butt whole has never been the same....JK....actually they freaked me out cause they were into wicca like hard core.  I moved in with them cause I wanted out of the barraks and they needed a roomate.   Well ages 21 and 18 (them) turned out to be 18 and 15....the 18 year old happend to have a husband (also a Marine) who was on deployment....yea that went well   (side note the 15 y/o was pregnent 4 months later by a guy I know....he's still in prison I think....

Second time I met a girl she was a hottie southern belle from Mississippi.  She and a bunch of her hottie friends did a spring break trip to mexico and made a side trip to come see me.  Didn't close the deal on that one but oh it was fun.

I met a third chick on the internet....she was about to go to boot camp in a couple of weeks and asked me a bunch of questions about it.  I talked to her for a couple of years till she made a road trip to see her brother in 29 palms.  She made a detour to see me....a night I wont forget.  I only lost contact with her after I got married.

I've only really met one guy from here in real life (it was AW actually) he was a squadmate.  I was on my way back to arizona from nebraska and remembered he was doing recruiting duty in colorado springs.  Pretty cool guy I called him up first from a pay phone then stopped by the RSS.  He offered to let me stay with him and his wife for the night but I had about 500 more miles to drive that day.

that's about it for internet to real life encounters.

I've met quite a few people IRL, not counting the AW Con in '99, some from here; Oopsy (you guys know him as Shane, he's actually pretty cool & laid back IRL), Drano, Oldman, and some others; and my car club started as a bunch of guys and girls on the internet who noticed that we were all from the same area.

The strangest one, though, was at a now defunct forum called Oscarfish.com. It was one of those threads that was named "Where are you?"

I said I was from Mountain Top. Another guy I knew wrote, "oh, I'm from Mt Top, too." I said, Fairview Twp; Oh, yeah, Fairview Twp!

Spruce St... Spruce St! 124... 128! I'm the guy with the brindle bulldog... LOL, I'm the guy you were talking to earlier today as he walked his St Bernard....

He's a good guy, has a cool dog & some nice fish, works booking travel for  entertainers.

Like Mosca, for me it's mostly been meeting people in real life. Not counting the 98 Con, I've met quite a few folks.

The only O-Club folks I've met are Montezuma (-MZ-), and Midnight Tahgut. I used to live in the same town as Sandman, and he even used to work on the same Contract as my wife, but our paths never crossed.

Tahgut and I get together once or twice a year when he's in town. What I always find funny is trying to figure out what to call people, since you get to know them by their handle, putting a new name to the personality is sometimes tough. I'm sure I called MZ "Monty" a few times when we were hanging out this summer.

Hmmm... Maybe we're going to have to set up a DC mini-con... or at least a night of drinking at the Brickskeller or something.

First time I met up on-line personas about 4 years ago. At SimHQ someone posted topic about meeting simmers at local museum. Carl and Matt from UBI came and three or five people showed up.  We had lunch together with long discussion about IL2 and games in general. Then we got a free copy of SH2 and invitation to beta test IL2-FB.

Later on someone from SimHQ wanted to have LAN in museum. 4 people showed up from WarBirds message board and IL2 players from SimHQ. We played couple rounds of IL2 (original). Guys were cool and I got to see different playing styles.

Another time bunch of people from WW2OL got a paintball meeting. 10 people showed up and we spend 4 hours shooting each other. Then we had lunch together chatting about game. I had great time.

Edit: During last trip to Russia I met couple people from St Petersburg (from Sukoy forum). They took me to their AeroClub and I got to fly Yak52. That was awesome!
:D

So far I never had bad experience....

One time, this dipwad who used to always come in and bug the watermelon out of me at ThrustMaster about getting support in Windows NT 4.0 turned up here in AH and started bugging me.  I still talk to that guy every now and then just to keep him from stalking me.  BTW...I know that was you at my bathroom window the other night, Mini!

Another time, I met up with a Croatian terrorist after he was denied entry at the Canuckian border.  Apparently, he was on his way to sex up some artist-type guy in Vancouver and the border guard figured out what he was up to.
