Even if they could....
« on: February 03, 2005, 02:07:03 PM »
Let us assume, for the sake of argument that the terrorists (lets keep them generic for the time being) could aquire an atomic device (as opposed to a nuclear device) I wonder:

(1) would they have the necessary technical expertise to deliver and detonate the weapon?

assume yes to the above

(2) would it help or hinder their cause--would they not use such a weapon for political reasons, e.g. massive retaliation, loss of allies? or

(3) would they detonate it without thought of the consequences? and where assuming they only get one (Isreal? UK? US? Australia? EU?)

Thoughts?

I remember reading somewhere that bin laden's "number" of infidel deaths they were trying to create was 250,000. Think this is related to when he got the fatwah from a saudi cleric that "authorized" the use of nukes and the like. This is the alledged number of muslims killed by non-muslims.

1 Yes, if they get one they will know how to set it off.

2 Yes they will use it, it will hurt their cause. It would change many people minds about he religion of peace.

1:  Someone with knowledge will teach them how to deliver the bomb

2: Bin Laden is brilliant he would use a nuke if it furthered his cause and it would..

3:ObL's objective was explained as being  detonations in 3 US cities which would in turn cripple the US economy and send us into a depression, all based on the fall of the USSR after thier radioactive accident that crippled the economy...

God forbid

Perhaps they would detonate it inside Fort Knox Gold Depository, irradiating all the gold within and causing the value of the gold that they posess to increase in value.

they dont really need a nuke, just a "dirty" bomb.  much less complex and easier to deliver.

Yeah, but if body count is the goal, they need the real thing.

from what I have read a "dirty bomb" has its own technical difficulties, and questionable effectiveness (as far as actuall causalties) I will try to dig up a link.

I reamin unconvicned that they would have the expertise to detonate it--it is not as simple as lighting a fuse.

It's silly toassume that the world's freedom fighters would eve use such weapons. It's much more likely that thje CIA would detonate sich a weapon in one of our big cities so we can use it as a pretext for a war to build a methane gas pipleline across the great high desert of Turkmenistan.
