Range Finding with Panzers
« on: March 02, 2001, 12:39:00 PM »
I'm having trouble with range finding when in a Panzer.  The shells have a noticable arc. I've noticed some tick marks with numbers in the gunsight.  Do these equate generally to target range?  For example if a GV is showing 2.7d should I adjust the elevation of my gun to be just under the 28 tick mark on the gunsight?

Also, how does one range in other ground targets like base ack, fuel tanks, radar, etc which don't have any range labels?

And, can a Panzer take down a VH, BH or FH by firing enough shells into it??

the ticks, i believe, are a measure of distance in yards( eg 18 = 1.8 d) However this isnt the end of the story, different elevations from shooter to target must be considered as well as recoil.

as far  hittin other base targets, no secrets here bud, practice is the key.  You can lob shells in  and then guesstimate your correction from the crater to the intended target.

and yes all hangers, factories, fuel tanks... can be killed.  HP shells work best for these though you sacfrifice range.

So how do you do this?  I was under the impression that you dont get range icons in GV to GV situations.

That was just an example but I thought I recalled actually seeing a range on a GV once. Maybe it's because most of use never get that close on the ground and the label doesn't appear until you get within a certain distance (closer than the typical 6.0d for aircraft).

An M-16 was spawning right next to a20 last night, drove a panzer out to meet him.  I nailed him at long range and then drove to near where I thought his spawn point would be in case he came back.  Sure enough he did, he had to be within 30 yards the 2nd time I got him, and no range indication.

Anyone know how he got himself to spawn so close to an enemy airbase?  I wish I knew that trick!

With this new map you can now actually select a remote location from the base.  Just click on one of the unidentified boxes in the hanger and you'll pop-up close to a nearby nme base.

This is what I do to range:

Find enemy gv with the sights.

Depending on how big it looks (on max zoom) you can determine if its in range or not. If its a little speck its obviously out of range. Wait until you can see its turret and make out its shape (and/or tell if its a panzer or ostie)..at that point it may be in range.

You then do an elimination process. Fire at the gv at your longest range tickmark. If the shell falls behind the GV, fire at the GV from the middle-range tickmark. If it falls in front then you know its range is between the last 2. Fire and observe and correct. Be aware that GV's do move towards you shortening the range and can move sideways.

Go offline and try to shoot your base's fuel tanks from outside the VH, you will get the nick of it quick.
