5" ack gun smoke in the way
« on: February 18, 2005, 09:17:52 AM »
Is it realistic for the 5"gun smoke to block gunners view?  Was gunner positioned behind the gun err?  Cant recall if the 8" HE guns even blow smoke, but even if they do it has no affect on gunning,  but in the puffy ack guns you sure need to see the your aiming at.  its not so bad if the wind blows it to the right or left but when it blow back in your face ya cant see nutton, I noticed that a target thats ( example)-  3.5k out by the time the smokes moves outa the way the target is now 2.0k +- sometimes.

And the guns wont shoot sometimes if your  close to part of the ship,  not pointed at the part just close. trying to estimate  the distance maybe several feet away from hitting ship.  it no shootie.

Typically, the secondary armament on a major WWII warship was controlled by special secondary armament directors, which were mounted high on the superstructure, away from the gun mounts.  This would normally tend to avoid any smoke problem from those guns.

It is likely that secondary mounts were physically limited from training to bearings and elevations which pointed them too close to ship structure, both to avoid directly hitting structure, and to avoid blast damage.
