The thinking was that forest fires are bad, they kill trees and bunnies; we must stop them all. It turns out forest fires are actually healthy and vital. Now, after decades without fires, forests are so dense with a variety of fuels that when they burn they have a tendency to destroy much more than they should. Fires are hotter, bigger, take down everything and are harder to stop. Things are way out of balance. Oops. Smokey was a fool.
It’s kind of like wildlife management: Foxes are bad because they kill bunnies; therefore kill the foxes. A few years later bunnies are starving to death because there are so many of them that they have eaten everything in sight; you can’t step out the door without stepping on a hungry bunny. Oops.
