(N) = north/south runway facing North.
(S) = north/south runway facing South.
(H) = spawn in a hangar
The other buttons are for large or medium fields that have NW to SE or NE to SW runways in addition to the north/south runway.

As for taking off in lanc while it's not easy, it's certainly not impossible

For starters only load 25% fuel. This will take you 6 sectors or 150 miles. It is VERY rare that you'll need more range than this.

Start engines. leave flaps up, use as little control as possible to keep in centered.

About the time the refuel shack flashes by hit a single notch of flaps. Wait till the last of the runway goes under your wheels then GENTLY lift it just off the ground. DO NOT try to climb, but hold it just 10 feet off the ground while you get the gear & flaps up.

Then slowly as it builds speed you can start climbing, once you've got some seperation you can start autoclimb and relax.

When your sitting on the runway, if there is a big hill infront on the horizon try to pick another runway.  Bases near the coast are good because it gives you a nice flat landscape to work that lanc into the air.   :D

Also some maps have had altitude tables on the net for the exact heights of some bases in the arena, this helps because you can take off at 5k height already, little bit of an advantage at times.

Actually, I find it better to takeoff from a runway in the rear area that is on a mountain top.  That extra 5,000-8,000 feet will save you time.  If you take off from somewhere closer to the front, your just going to have to fly away from the fighting untill you get enough altitude anyway.

And I find none of the runways long enough.  I don't think it is the plane's fault, just he short runways we have.  I just continue building up takeoff speed in the bumpy grass.  Alot of airfield of the day were grass anyhow, and the lancaster has some huge tires for that.

H, S, N, and the rest allow to choose which runway you want to start on.  With vehicles you can teleport accross vast distances using those buttons, as the vehciles don't start on runways.  So, to make a tank attack on an enemy base to the west, choose a tank and hit the "W" key to start you out damn near on top of the enemy base.
