A Few good tips to defend a base
« on: February 21, 2000, 10:20:00 AM »
After talking to tern in the training arena last night I realised that some simmers dont know all the tricks, guess thats what we are here for.

Base Defense Tips (Capped Fields)

Tip #1 When doing base defense you already know that the flight will be short dont take more then 50% fuel.
Tip #2 Use the Spit and 109F4
Tip #3 Dont carry anything on the wings.
Tip #4 There are wheel brakes on these planes use them [C] for left and [V] for right it will get you out of the vulching path.
Tip #5 if you can do the turn and burn dont take off from a capped field. Go to another and grab alt then engage the nme.

Hint 109f4 climbs like a bat out of hell when lite and is very manueverable.

Tip #6 If you are on an elevated field, drag the enemy below the lip. With any luck 5 guys will follow you, and when you die you have an alt advantage. You want to whittle them down a little at a time.

Tip #7 Don't chase planes that dive away. They are dragging you off base to sneak C47 in. Just grab while you have the chance, and keep looking down.

Tip 8
if your goal is to defend the field dont take off into the vulch until you see the 47.
Of the good low level (light) planes my favorite for waiting for the 47 is the LA5. Has good enough snapshot to take down a 47, combined with very short take off run and quick initial climb.

Some "Counter-tactics" would be what XXXX(to prevent this individual from being flamed) does...sit on runway with B26 and hose any planes attempting to take off...they need to work on that..disable guns on bombers while on the ground.

I am supprised they left the 26s nose guns on on the ground. I assume they are trying to find a way to disable the primary guns on the 26 without doing the same to the fighters. But if you where close enough that tactic would work for fighters too.
I tried that with a b26 once, and a niki quickly vulched me.....burns are still healing.I know that guy was laughing.

They can't disable the pilots/primary guns on the B-26, because they are the same setup in game as a Fighters' guns.

My preference would be to disable ALL guns on the ground. This would eliminate taxi'ing fighters from strafing troops.

But I talked to HiTech one time in one of his Q&A sessions once and he indicated that he wasn't going to do this.

So just realize that if you want to defend your base with "Dweeby" Spitfire armoured Car tactics, you gotta take the chance of a "Dweeb" in a blood pig B-26 sitting behind the spawn point hosing you down when you appear.

I wish they would BOTH go away as viable tactics.

If they disable the forward fireing guns on the B26 while they are on the ground then they need to disable ALL bomber guns until they are above 2K above any base.

The only reason I say all bombers is because yesterday I saw several Rook B17's ack starring around their base at a very low altitude to strafe troops, all the low fighters, and any goons coming in.

Just my opinion...

Tip #39 Grab your flakpanzer.

I really don't like the parking either, but I think the problem will be cured with vehicles in, so I'm content to deal with it until HT and Co. can get them in place for us.  Good place to suggest I think they should come out in a different place than the runway gen though!

Yeah, both taxistrafing and puketwinking (is that what it is?) are ridiculous tactics; if you're gonna disable the b26 guns on ground, do it to all the A/C, or you'll see the same whines when the FTD comes out.
My guess is groundvehicles is going to change everything.

And, re: base defense, I've got two approaches:
A. Low profile: wait in tower until C47 (or any other low dot on the horizon) shows up, grab a spit IX with 4x.303s, 25% fuel, and bust it.  If nobody is defending the field, you may have the "Cap" too high to spot you, or intervene in time.  Plus the IX will allow you a nice UFO-turn onto the C47 six if you screw the HO.  Finally, if you fail in your mission, that's what the .303s are for

B. High profile.  It's looking a lot like a vulchfest.  Follow the instructions above.  Oh yeah, and anyone see that interview on dogfighter with the RCAF pilot who described a German ace taking off in a 109 from a field they were suppressing, getting above them all and waxing 5 of 'em?

I agree with the suggestions of ALL A/C having guns disabled while on Mother Earth, after all, in real life, no one in their right mind would EVER land/be on land, with their guns charged, if they did, their would have been less aces and more grunts in WW2~
