Europe, too, seems to be figuring it out, albeit from the sidelines. Bush's recent trip there ruffled the usual anti-American feathers, but it also produced introspection in more than one outlet. The German newspaper Der Spiegel carried a revealing article titled "Could Bush Be Right?" that conjured the example of President Reagan and the fall of the Berlin Wall. A pro-Bush rally in Germany, of all places, was captured in the blogosphere, if not in the mainstream media. Over in England, the heretofore staunchly antiwar Guardian admitted that "the dark cloud of the Iraq war may have carried a silver lining."

are kind of nice to see in print, even though i have known and agreed all along.

i dont know much of the bay area papers, and stuff, so i dont know it's political leanings... but this sure sounds like someone saying "told you so" to the local liberal masses.

i may be wrong, but still i found it a good read.

Interesting artical indeed.

For me the Jury is still out. In principal I'm opposed to big powerfull nations using military might to impose regime change or whatever its called.

However there do seem to be changes afoot in the ME. Whether they will result in good or bad only time will tell. Democracy is all fine until a dictator is elected. Lets remind ourselves old uncle Adolf, was democraticaly elected. So for me the jury is still out. maybe good will come as a result of this policy. maybe we will end up with a more unified ME democratic but still opposed to US and western aims.

To tell the truth, I miss the Cold War.    That may sound crazy, but at least the Soviets were a known, rational enemy.   Sort of an equal/opposite, ying/yang kinda thing.   They fall, and pretty soon we have crackpot religious groups crashing airliners into skyscrapers, cutting off people's heads and missing nuclear weapons materials in Russia.    North Korea is completely out of control and China may soon own a majority interest the US economy if it doesn't already.

I wonder how much less we a spending on defense now, that the Cold War is over?   Seems to me the peace dividend didn't last long enough.

I wonder too, how the Russia people like their democracy.   Things working out OK for them now that the government answers to them?    What about your average, everyday, typical Ivan?  Are they a lot better off economically under a capitalist system?

Closer to home, we have Mexico, a democracy to be sure, but that mess south of the border has to be about the most dysfunctional, lawless country in the Western Hemisphere.

The Peace dividend is a con.

Basicaly Govts need to keep us under a potential threat. Its what keeps the military industrial complex running. There are too many vested interests for the world to be allowed to remain in peace. Find an enemy demonise them, drum up fear and bingo you have national cohesion, and a happy military and associated industry. Make people believe the enemy lies outside somewhere and you can gloss over the very real problems at home.
