if you are talking about that movie black hawk down....

i read the "hero" of the movie was in real life a guy who raped a 12 year old girl after he got out of the service...

i remember here in Milwaukee a bunch of groups went and picketed the movie when it came out, for glorifying a child molester.
I don't know what to put here yet.

from here (just a quick search):

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/trivia

Quote
Specialist Grimes, portrayed by Ewan McGregor, is a fictional character, though given his administrative position and penchant for coffee, he is unabashedly based on the real-life Ranger clerk Spc John Stebbins, who was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the battle. However, Stebbins was convicted in 2000 for child molestation and is currently serving a 30-year jail term. As a result, the Pentagon apparently pressured screenwriters to alter his name in the film, although a spokeswoman for the movie defended the change as "a creative decision made by the producers."

I agree that molesting children is just about the ugliest thing you can do.

But, gotta remain objective. Whatever he did in Somalia was heroic, or he wouldn't have gotten the SS.

So, he's done something heroic and something disgusting. He's still an arnoldhole in my book for the latter bit.

I was in a medical station one day while I was stationed at Ft. Campbell, and I remember hearing these pilots tell stories about what happened at somalia.  Heck Their hanger was about 3 down, and I never really heard about what was going on there.  I knew we had troops there but no idea what was going on.  They were the "little bird" pilots from the 160th SOAR.  They didn't go into much detail, but even what they did tell was incredible.

The Ltc. Col. Who Gave the go-code "Irene" later became our Brigade commander at the 101st,  I have his signature and comments on my medal recommandation while I was getting out.

I understood that Ewan McGregor's character was based upon an amalgamation a few different soldiers - but his coffee fixtation/admin position was based on Stebbins,

Yup,

Great movie.  To me the most amazing part of it all is not the fire fight or the 14+ hours they spent holed up.

it was the fact that they RAN in after all that because there wasn't enough room in the pick up convoy.  I read the book wich is a lot more discriptive (wich most books are) but I don't remember that part from the book.

that and the two snipers last stand.   truely heroic.

Yeah, one of the Rangers who fought in the battle of Mogadishu is in prison for child molestation.  They had to change his name in the movie because of it.  Think it was Stefens in real life.

I am grateful we have people in our country who are willing to kill and be killed.  But I dont idolize them like some do.  The true heros are those who invent and create for the good of man kind.
