If you have a 5xxx series card, use 61.77 driver.  If you have a 6xxx card, you can use the newer drivers.

Try turning your Vsync on.  Also check what your monitor refresh rate is set to.  I'm betting your refresh rate is set at default 60hz and your Vsync is off.

Right click on your desktop, and select Properties.  Go to the Settings tab and click the Advanced button at lower right.

The top right tab of your new choices should be your video card setup.  Click on it and find the section that contains vsync.  I dont know exactly what your setup is,  you'll just have to go down the list until you find it.

If you have frame rates at 120 I can guarantee its off.  The problem is what you actually see on your screen (frames per second) is limited by your monitor's refresh rate.  In your case, its 85.  So you physically will never see more than 85 fps no matter what your video card says it is putting out.  Vsync attepmts to put your video card's output "in sync" with the monitor's refresh rate, and shows you realistic frame rates.  Without this enabled, the video card can get way ahead of a slower system and cause freezes and stutters on your screen.

I'm not saying this is your only problem, but once you have realistic frame rates and you dont have to worry about stutters or freezes caused by this, other problems can begin to be ruled out.

yes you need vsync on .. or it will mess everything up ...

black screen of death could also be a weak power supply or overheating hardware .

I'm having the same problem with the 71.84 drivers.

I backdated my drivers to 61 but now Rome: Total War doesn't work and FS2004 has problems.  Unfortunatly, I don't have any drivers between 61 and 71 so I can't play AH and Rome: Total War without having to reinstall the drivers every time I change programs.

Anyone know where I can get older nVidia drivers till HTC finds the bug?  I could only find the latest one on nVidia's site.

Did you try the archives section at the Nvidia website?  66.93 I think is the one you want (assuming you have a newer 6xxx video card).

Couldn't find a link to the archive section but a quick search managed to scare up the right page.   I'll see if that fixes the problem when I get home.

Thanks for the tip.

ATI came out with new driver - CATALYST 5.4,
I've installed it , seems to be  ok now, no black or freezing screen.
in the control panel  in "monitor propperties" -> "adjustments" ->
"synchronization" -> i can turn the vertical on (which i did)
and also the horizontal (i left it  default - off).
should i turn horizontal on as well?
thx for hlp
yoel

With the MX4xxxx card you need to be using the NVidia 61.77 drivers.  Use DXDIAG to determine which driver you have loaded.  The last 4 numbers shown in the driver version in DXDIAG is NVidia's version number.

Bug, what issue are you having and what video card?

I take it is is an ATI card.  For X8xx video cards, the newest driver seems ok, but for older ATI cards try the 4.12 Catalysts.
