Dunno. Had lots of micro screen freezes yesterday. And after resetting vox the game locked up. Had to restart the PC cold.

Interested to know about the video cards and drivers you are running.

Why?

I have an ASUS 9570  which uses the Nvidia Geforce FX5700 chip.

If I use older drivers say 62.11 then I get lots of little screen freezes - just momentary things.  These are hardly noticeable on small maps but get intolerable on some large maps.

If I use a newer driver like 66.72 the small freezes dissapear but other problems appear.  The worst is a screen freeze that locks up the system for 20-30 seconds.  On occasion you can exit to desktop through alt-esc after a wait and reenter the game still ok.  More often it ends in a crash to desktop, server dropped and a game restart.

The 71.81 drivers are no better maybe worse.

The video card gets caught in a loop error.  Will try find details again.

Use the 61.77 drivers.  Lots of threads on this if you want to look it up and verify.  Nothing beyond this driver is optimized for the 5xxx series cards, its all for the 6xxx series cards from there out.  Causes lots of issues, as you have noticed.

Sent a mail to Skuzz, including a dxdiag.

He told me to make some changes on the video settings, that fixed it.

I noticed a whole bunch of freezes yesterday after switching to the 1024 texture pack. The odd thing is, my old system never had this problem and I've just upgraded to a far superior system... Using 71.84 drivers with my 6600 GT card, and selecting precaching and preload skins within video settings.  I just don't understand why this didn't happen with the older, weaker system.

I am thinking that 71.84 driver is the problem. I experience crazy video bugs like no gunsight and a loss of radar rings on the clipboard map for instance. Changing back to the 61.76 driver if I can find it. will post if that clears up the probs.

If you have a 6600 GT try the 66.97 driver.  I havent heard much on the 71.84 yet, but alot of people with it are having problems here.  61.77 wont do much for you if you have a 6xxx card, it was released before those cards came out.

The 61.76 driver fixed my problems. Now all the graphics work. Guess the NVidiea people should mention when a card is no longer supported.

Try reading the forums at DriverHeaven.  They keep track of all the latest drivers and you can be sure someone is going to post problems with them.

Its going to be an issue for awhile.  I mean, they still sell 8MB PCI cards on the shelf at CompUsa, and for as long as I can remember the "latest" drivers wouldnt hurt you, even if they didnt help you.  The advice has ALWAYS been to get the latest driver.  Apparently with the new generation of video cards, thats not true anymore, becuase ATI has the same problem.  Their newest drivers have issues with the 9xxx cards.  As long as they crank out the new cards, and esp. as PCIx begins to replace AGP, the "last gen." cards are going to get cheaper and cheaper, and more and more people will see them as viable "in between" upgrades.  And download the newest drivers for them, not knowing to do any different.

And you're right, both companies should come out (IMO) and let folks know, "Hey, you dont need this one if you have an older card, use this driver".  I'm sure they dont want to make direct comparisons that would hurt the sales of the older cards though.
