I am totally against the use of Nuclear Weapons
« on: September 12, 2001, 11:42:00 AM »
I don't think pointing a nuclear weapon at an enemy is the solution to this problem.  I don't like the cold anestheptic aproach.

I am all for sending our military in and taking on these terrorists in their own country.  I don't mean flying over and dropping a smart bomb... I mean sending troops in and resolving the issue.  And I feel bad for anyone that tries to stop us.

Its time to show what we are all about and to what lengths we will go to ensure this doesn't happen again.  I'm tired of putting technology up against people.  We are forgetting how to fight.  Time to kick bellybutton with a boot.

I don't see the need for ground troops. With enough info, you flatten the area the target is in. Nukes aren't needed against these sheep hearders .. carpet bombing maybe.

I don't see the need to have these kooks take another single American life if it can be avoided by our technological advantage..

Nuclear weapons would kill a lot of innocents, no matter where deployed. But the problem with those likely to have done this is that they couldn't give a damn about their own people.

They are not like us - they are consumed by self-righteous hatred to a point unimaginable to most of us. Nothing else matters.

Perversely, killing innocents in their backyards only strengthens their cause, since it is based on self-sacrifice and martyrdom.

That's the problem Eagler....

Technology is seperating us from this too much.  We are losing touch with the importance of humanaity.

We would not be sacrificing anyone.  Put a call out for volunteers and see how many you get.  This is a very personal issue with virtually everyone across the world.  Its time that things like this were dealt with on a more personal level.

Eagler,

In view of history, Viet Nam, and the USSR's experiance in Afganistan. Our experiance in the Balkans and Korea, I have to disagree with you. You cannot bomb these folks into the "stone age" with simple area weapons. You have to get down on the ground and deal with them there. The Air Force CANNOT take ground or eradicate a non hi tech threat. By dispersing troops you defeat the ability to destroy units on the ground with airborne weapons.

This is basic tactical knowlege. It takes some trooper to stand on te ground to get the enemy to leave and stay away.

It is a fact that in war soldiers die. There is nothing you can do to prevent it other than to make sure that the price the enemy pays for waging war is so high as to make it a worthless and fruitless endeavor.

Our military understands this and will get the job done. Pray for the troops that will be going in harms way.

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

AFAIK US doctrine says you only use nukes in response to "weapons of mass destruction" which are nuclear, biological, or chemical.

Missiles and bombs are nice but they are fired from a distance, which means they could hit the wrong target.  Killing innocent civilians with such an attack is just as bad as what these hijackers did.  And if you have bad intel, you might never know if you hit the right target.  The guy could get away.

If the bad guys are not in a major city, there are numerous US/NATO/EU/Russian/Former WP units which excel at quietly getting in to enemy territory, causing a lot of destruction, and getting out before the bad guys know what happened.

But if the bad guys are in a major city, one needs either cooperation of local authorities (unlikely) or a full scale land invasion (unsavory).

We will not use nukes except as a last resort. I wouldn't worry about that.

If we knew what country was responsible we would be hitting the UN for volunteers for an invasion that would make Desert Storm look like a dust devil. It would necessarily be a ground war, there would be heavy loss of life, that is a fact. The only question is how many of our cities do we allow to be bombed before we send those troops in (assuming we find a "place").

what about the option of making it so uncomfortable for the locals that they gladly hand him over? Take out power plants, water, transportation, communications, etc
Blockcade and embargo those that help these nutcases until it is unfeasible for them to do so..
I'm all for Johny sniper poping off the guilty ones as long as the snake loses enough of its head that it will not want to, care to or afford to grow back...

Sorry Eagler.. that only strengthens resolve.  Besides, its tough to make things more uncomfortable in a war ravaged nation.

Nukes are one tool in the tool box. Nothing should be ruled out.  Use the right tool for the job.  The job has yet to be determined.

from a military perspective nukes are inefficient. that may sound counterintuitive but it is military doctrine.

it's extremely unlikely that nuclear weapons would ever be used as anything but a deterrent.

Well,..this is a bit personal, but for the sake of understanding, I am going to shre this with you.
My son, who is in the Air Force and in the middle of SERE training finally got a call to us last night.  This is the conversation that transpired.  NOTE:  For the sake of brevity, I am leaving out the more personal aspects of the conversation.

Him: I do not have much time, they are shipping me out to expedite my training.
Me: I figured they would.
Him:  You know I won't be able to call again for a while.  I don't know whow long they are going to keep us at alert.
Me:  I know.
Him:  I just wanted to let you know what was happening.
Me:  I appreciate it son.  Your mother has been worried, as you probably know.

(Note:  Mom was at the hospital giving blood last night when I got this call)

Him:  I am sorry I missed her.
Me:  I will tell her you called.
Him:  Thanks.
Me:  You know what you may be going into ,..don't you?
Him:  Yes.  All I can say is I will not let you, mom, or my country down.
Me:  It could get ugly.  I just want to try to say...
Him:  Dad, you don't have to say it.  I know, but we have to do what we have to do.  You were in here, you know.
Me:  I know,..I am proud of you.
Him:  Thanks.  Tell the family I love them....I love you too Dad.  Please tell Mom I love her too.
Me:  I will.  Just be careful.  Remember your training and come home safe.
Him:  I will.  I have to go.
Me:  Good luck and be careful.

I managed to record this on the answering machine while we were talking so Mom could here it.
What goes unsaid between a father and a son could fill volumns of books.  I hope I said enough.
I also hope those of you that are concerned about a War, due to the lives that will be lost, understand.  I am ex-Air Force, and was in Special Ops, just like my son is doing.  We both know and fully understand, the protection of our way of life cannot be compromised.  No matter what happens to my son, I will be and am very proud of him.
I only wish I could be with him.
He and all the others of our military signed up for this task.  They all understand what is required of them.  They will gladly do whatever it takes to preserve our way of life, protect the sanctity of the family, and show the world a pride in country that is second to no one.
I don't want to lose my son, or anyone to lose any family to a War, but running from a bully will only cause that bully to keep pushing us around.  It is time to take a stand and one that is as solid as the land we stand on.
If you do not have the stomach for it, then please move out of the way and let our boys and girls do what they have to do, for the future sake of all our children.

And I agree with Deja, Nukes are a weapon of LAST resort, not something you toy with like a cruise missle containing 2k warhead.  I hope we never have to use nukes, because part of ou countries policy regarding the use of nukes is that..if we do use nukes, that means our destruction is surely imminent as well.

I ain't goona lie Rip,..it is pretty hard right now.  I have to resolve myself to the fact that I know what he may have to do.  I was there, and went through all the same training.
I feel more for parents of children in the military who were never in the military and really do not know what thier child is getting ready to go through.
I have to hang on to that and be ready to help those who cannot know.
