First draft: Art Heiden's Lucky Lady
« on: April 30, 2005, 09:12:23 PM »
This is the first look at the skin in flight.

Two things need to be done before I submit it.

1) The score board need to come forward a bit.
2) I need a richer yellow for the spinners and edge cowling.

Very nice ww.  I'm sure Mr Heiden will be pleased.

For the yellow, have your tried starting with x'FFB700'?  I believe that is the USAAF color yellow according the color charts available at skinners heavenskinners heaven

Not sure but the yellow may also have been painted on the  strakes of the oil radiator intakes under the prop spinners.

Okay, I got the yellow right, moved the scoreboard and did some detailing. I think its ready.... Copies e-mailed to Art. Below are three screen shots of Lucky Lady and a photo given me by Art.

I hate to be picky cause I'm no good at doing the skins, but I figured I'd ask anyway :)

Are you going with black anti-glare?  Sure looks from photos like it's OD.  Note the contrast between the black scoreboard and the OD anti-glare in the photo of Lucky Lady you posted.

And isn't the white nose band just a bit too narrow compared to the real deal?

Other then that it looks great.  I wish I had the patience for it.  I got more then a bit frustrated with my attempts at G models for the 80th FS and the 475th FG.

I suppose WW can find out from Art whether black or dark OD is correct for the antiglare panels.   NIce to be able to go right to the source!

http://www.skinnersheaven.com has a nice dark olive drab should you decided to change it...

btw its easy to change if your graphics progam has a 'smart select' or 'lasso' feature.   just select the panel 's color and use the paint bucket tool to change the color all I once.

I know on my first skins I repainted by hand when needed until I found out this trick...

Another tip WW, when making screenshots, if you use the zoom function you can reduce the stretched appearance in some of the closeup shots.   Not sure why that is, I think the default camera eye has a different FOV than the human eye, but with zoom you can approximate it?

Nice job on the intakes!

Dan and Oboe, how's this look? Matte olive drab anti-glare panels. By the way, interior of wheel doors and wheel wells are now zinc chromate... A nearly useless detail, but what the heck!

Man, awesome work WW.  The only thing I can see to mess with is the specularity, it doesn't seem to be reflective enough for a metalic skin.  Note the reflectiveness on the nose of the P38 Dan posted in the picture.

Hmm, on second glance it looks like the tip of the nose cone is painted as well, though I can't tell what color from the photo.  Dan can probably answer that.

Can't wait to shoot it all to pieces in the MA

One last thing - are you using the font "AmarilloUSAF" for the ID letters on the tail and fuselage?  I can't tell from the screenshots but the "H" on the inside tail looks slightly thicker than I imagine AmailloUSAF to be.

The font is available from skinner's heaven.

Kev367th has a layer that contains all the warning texts blocks that appear all of the aircraft, if you're interested.   Adds a bit of authenticity even though the text is unreadable for the most part.

Oh, and on the outside of the nacelles, down near the front-bottom, there is a panel called the "oil radiator shutter", to which a shadow can be applied along the top and front lines to show the shutter is open.    Its a square panel directly aft of the oil radiator intakes under the prop spinners.

Its looking very nice!
