Are they a good thing? Or do they do more damage to the community than makes it worth while?

I'm not saying it should stop, but I think that this is possibly the most hostile board available to the community. I see far more personal attacks and flaming on this board than on any other, mostly with regard to politics and related sensitive and not so sensitive issues.

I'm asking two questions, really. One is the question above... good or bad. The second is, do you think that these personal attacks could be curbed a bit? There's no way of stopping them of course, and if someone says something that truly offends me, than I may get angry and post something that I shouldn't. Mistakes are made.

However, attacks on someone's morality/character because you disagree (politics, right/wrong) and not because you have been insulted - and someone saying that they are pro-life, or that they are anti-gun control is not an insult - are really not condusive to a friendly community.

Even if you have been insulted, attacked, whatever, the best thing to do, is to take a deep breath and come back later when you can respond with your head, and not your... well, you know what I mean I think.  :)

Problems are going to happen, but more can be avoided, don't you think?

So, if we can all agree to disagree before we start to argue about it, wouldn't this board be a nicer place? It's far more interesting, for me at least, to argue when it's the issues that are being argued and not how ugly postera, posterb, posterc, et al might be  :)

I suppose I sound like a peace-loving hippy wuss with this, but it stems from real concern. Twice in my experience, the EAW community over at the old Combatsim.com boards was nearly torn apart by these things.

Thoughts?

You're all a decent bunch in my book.
Just wrong, that's all  ;).

S!

:)

Go back and read the threads here on:

1. Abortion

2. Gun Control

3. The Election

4. Which side really did what in WW2.

Flames? Yup.

...and the major participants joke about it now.   ;)

Yes, they do... well, some. Others hold grudges that last forever, it seems...

I'm probably overly concerned, true. But personal attacks drive me nuts!

Some people here have a urge to flame, call with names and throw insults to some other people in this UBB.
I've found it fun to give 'em something back.
(Thought I would rather read "Caption this photo"-topics than flamewars).

ispar=Rodney King...

"Can't, can't we all just get along?"

Well, the issues of the day generally have two sides.  Polarizing sides too. And when the personal insults by the maggot infested, dope smoking, FM types start to fly I sit back and smile.  I know these pink-o Libs have lost yet another argument, again!!!

I love politics :D  So pick a side and have at it!!

It's just a bulletin board ispar. Some (me) make comments in the extreme sometimes for effect. I asure you I am not as I seem here on the board as I am in my daily life nor do I think most are. Try not to take it all so personal. I appreciate your viewpoint, no matter how misguided it is  :)

The OT board is a good place to vent.

There really are some good discussions hiding around here.

Even the flames here are not as bad as some I've read elsewhere (even on the AH site).

I try to read the intense flames with one tongue in cheek -- not too seriously.

Hey Dowding, you commie-pinko socialist, how come you didn't start a thread on YOUR election? Eh?

We haven't had a good mud-slinging, plate throwing argument in a long time!

Turn out the way you wanted it to? hahhahhahhah!

See, Ispar? We LOVE each other under the gruff exteriors!

"I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect HAR-MO-NEE!..."

Cya up there Dowding  ;)

I've had a few arguments with guys on the BBS but I normally don't hold it against them elsewhere.

Hell Nash and I have butted heads many times but I would still clear his 6.

Heh, i like these discussions. With the exception of the blatant extremists, they're good fun.

And with some posters, they make me more clearly understand the positions of both republicans and democrats, and of people in general here in AH.

All good, IMHO.

If we could just rid the boards of Eurotrash, this wouldn't be a problem.  We Americans could just sit back and talk about what a wonderful nation we have and how glad we are that we aren't European.

Thanks guys  :).

I think that I have a few bad recollections of topics on this board. And of course, I'm probably a bit more reserved about throwing handfuls of myud around - I prefer to leave a good impression. But since it doesn't seem to carry over to other boards and other places, and since I don't actually know you guys...

Where's cabby? *THWACK-SPLAT!*

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  :D

I love being in this board's political minority.  ;)
