Just put in my new Gigabyte motherboard, Athlon 64 3200+ and 1 gig of Corsair ram memory.

Now, Windows wont start up and the initial screens as the comp trys to start list my cpu clock speed at 200mhz and only shows128m ram.

Anyone who thinks they might be able to help can call me at 303-466-3480.

I followed the instructions carefully for all the connectors on the motherboard. Cpu fan is running, all led lights on the front of the case come on like they should. Dunno what the deal is heh.

The cpu and ram sat here taunting me for a week while I waited for the motherboard to show up, now it isnt working properly. Think I am gonna cry. :lol

*edit* The 128m ram is my vid card. D'oh!!! :rofl

the only thing i can think of is re-format? i've had to with every motherboard i've tried. if the connections are good (double check) then it's probably just needing re-format. o ya and your fsb speed has a multiplier of 4 on 64 bit system...so it's really 800Mhz:aok

If this is Windows XP, you can do an install without a reformat.

Just start up the XP CD, and when Windows gets to where it is looking for another installation of Windows, it will prompt you and allow you to let Windows to try to repair the installation.
This is not the "Repair" option, which just takes you to a DOS like prompt.  This repair option happens much later into the install process.

Ughh, to late, partition on the HD already deleted and HD is being reformated as I type this.

I didnt save anything before I put in the new motherboard either :(

sorry about that...i knew about doing that Skuzzy, but forgot compleatly because i always just start over...sorry for lost info

The lost info isnt your fault, it's mine for not saving the stuff that needed to be saved prior to changing the motherboard. :)

Windows reinstalled, doing updates to Windows right now. Just might make it into AH before the night is over. Still have to download and install drivers. Also have to download AH still.


Reinstalling Windows seems to be what the problem was :)

Yeah, that was the fastest Windows install I have ever done.

Side note, on one restart my monitor wouldnt come back on. Couldnt figure out why. So just as a first step in tracking down the problem I ripped out my FX5700LE vid card and put in an older ti4200 model.....monitor came back on. So tomorrow I have to call PNY tech support and get some warranty action on a dead vid card. The fan on the dead card wont even move. Stupid card is less than a year old. grrrrr

All Windows updates done now, going after vid/sound drivers, then directx, then AH!!

Wish I had caught you earlier.
When swapping motherboards and your using Windows XP or 2000 do the following -

Before you remove the old one go to the device manager, change your IDE drivers to Microsoft Standard IDE drivers.

If you are using SATA pre-install the new SATA drivers using the Add/Remove hardware wizard.

Then swap motherboards.

I made it into the game late last night. Even with an old heat damaged ti-4200 vid card the game ran very smooth for me.

On hold with PNY's tech support right now, trying to get some warranty action on the dead card. :)

Awww for crying out loud! The PNY vid card I purchased last June had a lifetime warranty which the company has revoked. This blows big nasty green chunks. :(
