Minicon - Munich, Germany - anyone interested?
« on: June 28, 2005, 02:09:04 PM »
Hi all

Expanding on this thread who would be interested in a meet-up later this year in Munich, Germany?

I used to organise meet-ups in the UK and it's been suggested that I have another go over here.

There are two museums in Munich which would be the centre of our meet up.  They are:

Flugwerft Schleißheim which is a former WW2 and US Army airfield in the north of Munich (a couple of WW1 & WW2 aircraft, plus experimental aircraft).

Deutsches Museum München which is in the centre of Munich and is a general museum but also has an aviation section including some WW2 aircraft.

As well as the museums, Munich is considered the beer capital of the world!  So it's a good opportunity to get well and truly sloshed, if an excuse is needed of course! ;)

There was some talk of having this take place during the Oktoberfest but I think this would prove expensive for hotels and flights.  Eitherway, there's enough beer anyway without a festival!

There's a lot of history in Munich, most notably stuff associated with the Nazi regime.  Also to the south in the Alps is Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest) which was Hitler's alpine summer house.  This could be included if people were interested.

So, I already have a few people interested but I'd like to know how many more people were interested and a possible date.  Maybe late October? (after Oktoberfest)

I can put up two people in single beds and possibly one more on a sofa.  I might be able to get a discount at a Holiday Inn for those wanting to stay in a hotel.

For those in the UK, everything over here is relatively cheap and the transport system is very good with excellent access to the entire city.

Please reply to this thread to show your interest!  For additional comments then please email me.

Hey Rip

By train it's a very long journey!  I just checked the times and it would take about 10 hours!  Best option would be to fly since it would take only 1hr 35mins and at about the same cost ($150 ish).Oktoberfest would be between 17 September to 3 October so during this period it could be pricey.

Do you know the definite dates yet?  Would be cool to finally meet you after over 5 1/2 years of knowing you online!

Can you make it? I'll buy you a beer for each of my O-club transgressions. Could be an expensive trip... :lol;)

Cool Skuzzy! ;)  When were you last over here?  Which places did you go to?

Beetle, you do know that they serve beer in a Maß which is actually 1 litre... and could easily turn out quite expensive! ;)

Of course, depending on how long people are staying for, we could squeeze in Neuschwanstein castle too, which is the castle Disneyland is based on.

It's been 9 or 10 years.  Places?  The Beergartens, of course. :)  Started on a Friday around 4pm, and after two beers was having a difficult time navigating the streets.
Had a lot of fun.  The people were awesome and you just had to love the way the street stores would put out chairs and tables for the drunks to be able to sit and recognoiter (I am sure they were for some other things, but I cannot recall).  :D

Went crusing the country side with a friend in his BMW and visited some small towns father North (might have been Northwest,..possibly Northeast..).

Just had a lot of fun.

I dunno if I can make it or not, but I have been wanting to get the Wifey to German for years.

Skuzzy, if you're not able to make it this time then let me know when you might visit another time.  I should be here for another 2 1/2 years before moving on... although I really want to stay here for the rest of my life!

Oi, you missed one...

Bavaria won't let any beer be sold that includes anything artificial!  So no chemical rubbish!  Definitely nice beer! :)

I love the dunkles Weißbier if served as 0.5 litre, or the dunkel bier if served in a Maß (1 litre).  Problem with the Maß is that you drink it like normal beer... then wonder why you're so drunk! ;)

That is it exactly!  One minute you are slogging one down and the next you are wondering why there are three glasses on the table in front you and you cannot grab any of them!  :D
