They're actually Carpenter Bees.

Here's a photo:

I found great success shooting them using green 6mm Airsoft BBs and getting them while they hovered near the nests they 'drilled' into our patio.  The spring-loaded airsoft guns were powerful enough to knock them down and made it a simple task of killing them using the human foot.  Occasionally if you hit one right it would pop or just die on impact but I found this to be rare.

Never had the need to get the Remington 11-87 with my skeet loads :)  Muahahaha!  I save those for spiders.

The old tennis racket was always a lot of fun took some skill to. We did finally find an exterminator he used some kind of powder I dont remember what it was called. The powder did a prity good job for a few weeks a month but we would always have to call the exterminator to come back. After he was done you wait till dusk try to find all the holes spray bee killer in them and fill the holes with some thing like caulk, woodfiller or silacone. It turned out that the best thing i did was put a heavy coat of stain on the deck That kept all but a very few from finding there way back. Beware though they will return with a vengence once you get them off your deck they will come back and attack every peace of wood in your house they can find they even got up into my attic now thats determination. They seem to eventually get peed-off and clever finding all kinds of places that are the most difficult to get to. Two years after staining my deck I spent 3200 dollars in other repaires trim and soffet boards mostly way up high where I was not willing to go. The contracktor cut one of the infected boards to show the damage i thought they burrowed into the wood maybe an inch or two was i shocked they would go anywere from 8 to 18 inches deep. Anyway what i found is the best way to get rid of them is paint and stain. One of my neighbors says that you can now get bate type killers a peace of wood with some kind of chemical that killes them when they burrow in but just incase always keep a tennis racket handy. good luck
