Turbo question....
« on: July 16, 2005, 04:54:58 PM »
Using the notion that you can't get something for free, what is the input energy for the large increases of HP from turbo / super charged engines?

While there is a small portion of HP lost due to the super charger running off the engine, where is the corresponding input of energy into the engine coming from?

Is it the increased fuel useage?

The input side of the equation needs to be higher than the output side.

Also with the F4U (at least in AH2) the FPM goes down on WEP, not sure why on that point, energy for nothing?  ;)

hope this all makes some sense  :D

with more air more fuel must be added . a supercharger is run off the cranckshaft ,a turbocharger uses exaust gas pressure.  as for the rest what is fpm?

A turbo-supercharger puts more air into the engine and there is a corresponding fuel increase to keep the fuel air mixture equivalent.

With more air/fuel going into the combustion chamber than a normally aspirated engine a T-S engine uses the fuel / air of a larger displacement engine.

More equivalent displacement = more HP.
