Rampaging dog bites car
28 July 2005

A pitbull terrier rampaging through Rotorua's western suburbs attacked one car so violently it shook the vehicle and the terrified driver inside.

The Rotorua woman had swerved to avoid the dog wandering on the road.

Now she wishes she'd "killed the bloody thing" after the enraged dog - identified by animal control officers as a pitbull - turned on her car.

Christina, who declined to give her full name, was still visibly shaken when she spoke yesterday.

The dog attacked her car, physically shaking it and leaving 18 bite marks in the front bumper of her Mitsubishi Galant.

It was the third car the dog had attacked that afternoon.

The incident has brought back terrifying memories of five years ago when a family member was almost killed after a dog attack. It is something Christina is still not ready to talk about.

Residents of the area helped Christina get the dog chained up and put it in her boot so she could take it to the pound.

They need to just get rid of these things, period.

Give the owners two weeks off of work to boo-hoo about it, then back to business as usual.

no, actually pitbulls can be very loyal and sweet dogs in the hands of a good owner. most of the dog attacks you hear about in the media are usually white trash who mistreat them in the name of making them into guard dogs.
learn the facts before you form an opinion.

Bah.

Pitbulls very loyal and sweet...sure.... and they can and do kill people.

They're unpredictable - even in the hands of good owners. Seen it. Their brains are messed up, and they are wired like bombs.

I feel for the owners, but ya know what? I don't wanna be the guy walkin' down the street minding my own business when one of 'em snaps. I resent even the remote possibility of it happening.

"They" would be the law makers.

Grandfather the living and ban the breeding.

I would love to be able to shoot the things on sight. Hard to say, but I doubt I'd lose sleep.

yeah man shooting dogs is cool because they might attack you!!!!!

pitbulls aren't ticking time bombs as you put it, if anything they're the opposite. don't want one attacking you? then don't hang around a white trash family that mistreats it. any breed of dog can hurt you, but we don't go around in fear of poodles every day.

seriously get the facts and make your own opinion instead of believing whatever the news media feeds you.

Holy geeze - you mean it's possible to form my own opinion without the news media? Golly - whodda thunk it?

Thanks for the tip.

I guess it behooves me to follow the worldly advice of a guy that tries to compare pitbulls to poodles, and comes up with the wonderfull solution of not hanging around white trash.

Thanks. Really.

I've been around dogs all my life.  I've worked as a dog trainer teaching obedience as well as agility.  I've spent a fair amount of time around pit bulls.  They can, and do, snap for no good reason, even if they're brought up right.  I've seen hospital photos of a little girl that was attacked by the family pet.  Seen dogs that were literally torn to shreds when a pit bull decided it messed up.  I've watched a pit bull with my very own eyes that was raised by a loving family from a pup run to the neighbor's yard and snap the neck of their dog who had just come outside.

They're time bombs.  The dogs were bred to fight and kill.  You can't take that out of them.  No amount of training can remove that instinct.  I have a Collie that I rescued from an abusive family.  He's never been trained to herd.  Know what he does when he's stressed out?  He runs around and tries to get the family into a tight circle.  Know what a pit bull does when it's stressed to the breaking point?  I hope you're never around one to see it.

Cougar, you don't know the history of Pit Bulls.  I do.  If you understand the history of Pit Bulls, you'd know that they're perfectly safe.  There's misinformation, OK, about the history of Pit Bulls, and you don't understand like I do, Cougar.  You don't know about Pit Bulls, Cougar.  Cougar, you're just glib.  You should really research Pit Bulls.  Like I have.  This is a very important issue.  You don't know, and I do.  You should be more responsible before you post, and know, like I do.
