New computer specs- help a n00b :)
« on: September 07, 2005, 08:24:14 AM »
Here is the specs for the new computer I've decided to put together. I was looking for a Northwood Pent 4 but I can't find one...

If you have any suggests for speed/price/use PLEASE feel free to correct me. :)  This is likely my last computer for somet time and this is my FIRST build, ever.

I'll be taking my current system apart and (except for my sound card) be using it for my other system my nephew plays on.

I'm pretty sure that all Pentium 4s use Socket 478 motherboards.

Froogle for CPU

Socket 478 Motherboard. Comes with nice little programs. No PCIe through.

Not from what I've been reading and checking out, tho most are EM64T.

Would anyone go Dual Core at this point? Is it worth the money? Is it extemely hard to set up? I would need to run Windows 64 for any 64 bit chip, right?

Although I have a P4 3.0 right now, if I was going to build a new system today I would go AMD 64, WAAAAY more bang for your buck. Stay away from dual core if it will primarily be for AH.

i second that thought ...

those prescott p-4's are a battle with heat and throttling back  imo ...

if your gonna stay p-4 i'd suggest shoping for a northwood cpu .

yea run 64bit windows with the amd 64.

If the 64s are the way to go, whats the best/most economical in the way of AMD 64s?

I really welcome all advice, I don't want to make costly mistakes building this.

I appreciate the time. :)

I'm looking at these two AMD chips instead of the Pent 4 in lieu of recommendations.

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3800BPBOX - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103531

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA4000BNBOX - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103529

What MB would you recommend? Is SLI worth the money? I was going to get a single ATI 800xl.

Whats the difference between the Venice and the San Diego chips?

My brother just got  an MSI neo 4 sli platinum with two 7800. Works real smooth. I'd prob get an sli board because it can run 1 or 2 cards. Well as long as they are nvidea anyway.

IIRC (don't quote me...) SLI is a nVidia technology. It joins two video cards together to combine their GPUs and RAM.

Get the second one. The San Diego core has twice the cache the Venice has, although either would be a great choice in the "bang for buck" catagory.

This is just me, but I would not get PCI-E right now if you have a pretty decent AGP card. It will be a while before PCI-E becomes dominant. AH is not very sensitive in the video card area, CPU horsepower is the single most important part of a computer being built with mostly AH in mind.

I just noticed you have an FX5700 video card, in which case I would go PCI-E. it would be worth the extra $ for a new video card in that case.

bang for the buck c.p.u? mid range 939 amd64 will hang with/surpass anything but the most expensive intel (not lookin for a debate, don't think there is one) everthing else is fine(may have fewer problems with some other brand of sound card, but i gave up on sound blaster and get better perfprmance, barely, with my on board.)
MSI k8t neo mobo

There are several socket types for the P-4 processor, There is the LGA 775 or Socket T, and the Socket 478 that can use either the northwood or prescott cores. The Socket T has a pinless processor design where all the pins are actually in the socket in the motherboard. If you go to http://www.pricewatch.com you can still find socket 478 northwood processors for sale at various business which will be listed lowest cost including shipping to highest. Depending on what you prefer the p-4 and amd based boards are great and both offer awesome performance. I am currently running a P-4 3.2 extreme edition but am getting ready to build a new amd based system just for *****s and giggles.

How does this look? It looks like I will be running the single sli based vid card until I can put more money together.

Again, I am more than open to suggestions and thanks for your time :)

(sort of waiting for Skuzzy to pipe in as well).
