The system was more complicated. It had governor based on the mercury - the air pressure from the pitot tube would push the mercury in the tube up preventing it from engaging the electrical switch at the bottom of the tube. The G force would pull the mercury down... if G would be high enough or speed would lower decreasing the air pressure, the mercury in the tube would go down and engage the circuit which would itself open the hydraulic lines and extend the flaps... Interesting is, that as long as the circuit is closed the flaps would continue extending, but as soon as the mercury would go up (because G would drop or speed would increase or both) the flaps would start to retract - that way they would never deploy longer or further out than needed. The exact equations needed for the system to work are described starting on page 36 - I will have to read it first and I will give you the data later. It could operate in full G range of Shiden/Shiden-kai airframe... that would be up to 7g I think. It is possible that they describe only the general physics behind the mechanism and then we would need some help from Wells or anybody else capable of calculating the mechanism for us. I suppose the entire thing wouldn't work without additional code in TR too, but those flaps were giving Shiden so much advantage over other fighters, according to IJN pilots, that I really wish we had them done right.

Now the flaps in Shiden-kai would extend up to 30 deg and flaps in Shiden only up to 25 deg - data is in the table at the page 154. That is max deflection and the automatic flaps governor could work in the whole range. Take a good look at pictures on the pages 19 and 36 - those are Shiden-kais, but the flaps were very simillar in both models AFAIK. I think the diagram on the page 38 is somehow misleading - it was not small part of one big flap which would extend down in addition... the flap was made of two separate parts, like in modern planes. First the shorter one on the outside would extend backwards and down (that would be first notch, probably 10 degrees) and then if you extend them further the second bigger part would start extending increasing the angle. In other words I think those two parts operated together and it can be visible on the two pictures mentioned above, which show full flaps extended.

It is quite interesting that if operated manually flaps would work just like in any other planes - I think they had 2 notches - 10 and 25 (or 30 in Shiden-kai) degrees. In combat mode however they could operate in whole range depending on the g and speed - so deployments of 12 or 17 or 23 degrees, for example, all were always possible...

I will check on that later on and post additional info.
