TrackIr4....
« on: November 22, 2005, 08:27:33 PM »
Ok FEDEX just delivered my newest addition to my Gaming life:lol

What I am looking for is advice and help. I'll get to working on it when I get home. I am basically stupid about puters and all.

Is this thing fairly easy to get setup and stuff? Or do I need to just take the tylenol before hand to save time.

i recomend the "aggressive" setting for all axis, most ppl make their own custom set ups but i am still happy with this setting.

after awhile...

set your zoom in AH to roughly at 45-60 degree view...instead of the default 90 degrees

more like being "in" the plane...

And you can forget about hitting any plane with your guns for awile...you'll have the gunsight all over the place...

I forced myself into using it by removing all the view keys programed into my joystick.

Redtop see my post in technical support.

Map a key to the forward view.. depress it when your ready to shoot.  It gives you the combination of a "steady" forward view (no yaw in view) and the ability to move your head up/down or left/right.

PM me in the MA and I will email you my profile.  And yes... get the tylenol out ...

when you get good you wont need to fire in a steady forward view, i did that button combo when first using it too, but after a while you will find it un necasary.

I often get shots in out of the corner of my screen while  view i slewed sideways and over the side of the cockpit to get big horizontal deflection shots.  Tir will change the way you think about gunnery.

Better field of view, faster, smoother tracking, designed to attach to flatpanel monitors, maybe some others.  The gist of it being an improved TIR3.

Congrats, welcome to the next level of geekdome.

Did you purchase Vector expansion along with TIR4? TrackIR is one step, but vector expansion will make your wide eyes even wider (if thats possible). You're still in business without vector. Aces High will follow your saved head positions to some degree; no head-on-stick business ala IL2.

As for setting up the hardware, it's no more difficult than installing any random USB device. The directions and software are intuitive, plug it in when told to, etc. Aces High detects TIR automatically, so there's nothing to set up in game.

Comfort and distance from your head to the tracking device will be your first priority. I understand TIR4 was designed to clip easily to flatpanel screens? At any rate, the distance is important - try positioning it atleast 2.5 - 3ft in front of you. Any closer and you might see freezing (losing track of the dot/hat). Setting it atleast 3ft guarantees the trackhat or tracking dot will not go out of range. I think the TIR4 has a wider field than the 3, so this may not apply.

There are three hotkeys you'll be using often. You can map them to your stick if you want:

[list=1]
  • Toggle tracking on/off: Have mine mapped to the right shift key.
  • "Precision mode": A handy 'focus' tool when you want to temporarily "lock" into gunsight mode. It severely limits the speed at which each axis moves, especially side/fwd-back/up-dwn movement (x/y/z axes). Mine is numpad delete key.
  • Recentering button: Will recenter your 'game' head regardless of your real head position. Have mine mapped to the End key.
Initially you'll be doing a ton of small tweaks to the track-scaling of each axis (pitch/yaw/rotation/etc), thankfully AH alt tabs nice.

Once you're set up and ready for combat, get ready for suckage. Pound through it. Yer gonna learn to ride the bike again. Took me forever to feel comfortable and 'react' as I do now, instead of thinking about my head movements. I cheated and disabled it a lot before entering a fight.

Also you might get dizzy when you first use it Lasted me only one night, it's fun. Oh, and check out the view options in Aces High for the "relative mode." It basicaly locks the x/y/z axis to move relative to your plane's position and not your TIR 'eyes.' You'll know what I'm talking about once you're in. (only applies to vector).

Good luck!

Any chance you could post a before and after screen shot of this?

Eilif,

My forward view is not "steady".. I keep Track IR running and simply ADD the forward view by depressing the button mapped to it.

The result is the forward view is always "true" with no way I can possibly yaw my view inadvertantly.   This combo simply locks the forward view in, and any head movements only translates on the view vertically or horizontally, but not yaw.

PS I tried "turning off" my TIR for shooting, and found it not to be workable.

practice following targets with zoom on full, this will get those neck muscles steady.

IRL there was never a "true" forward view, you need to kick the habits your learned with hat switches, the reason they made reflective sites was so you could move your head around, as long as you keep your heads x and y position so that your  pan movement can keep the gunsite inside the glass reflector and somewhere in view you will do fine.  Basicly ya just gotta loosen up, the hat switch was too restrictive and you shouldnt be limited by it, makes us only feel comfertable firing when gunsite is in center of screen, quake style, try shooting looking sideways, once you get comfertable with that you will have developed a better sense of space and it will bring up your gunnery versatility and accuracy.

Eilif,

I wasnt posting that for help, I was trying to explain to you that I have found what I consider to be the best use of TIR while firing.

That is, to have the best of both worlds which is freedom in the X and Y movements, while locking out the ability to input yaw regardless of where you mover your head.

You accomplish this by inputting the FORWARD view buttton (mapped to your throttle) when your ready to fire.  It gives you the X and Y ability to see over and to the side of the cowling AND eliminates the need for you to keep you head perfectly 180 degrees of your TIR.

Try it and see what you think.

TrackIR4 question:

In game head in Track program view looks straight up, but straight up view in AH canopy doesn't - stops at about a 60 degree angle, so missing part of fov out top of canopy.  All other axis views work fine.  How to adjust?  TY!

might just be getting out of the range of the tir camera, try repositioning it.
