I am running Norton's Internet Security and have had excellent service from it. One thing that has started happening recently is I get "intrusion alert" warnings occasionally while I am using AH. I understand firewalls and such can cause problems, but I have had no problems, just these occasional blocked attempt warnings.
When I check the logs, the offending IP numbers have nothing to do with AH that I can tell, and am posting here to see if anyone knows if these attempts may be Norton's encountering game requests or if there may be someone attacking my computer WHILE I am playing AH.
My hands are up and my shoulders are shruggin. I have not a clue since I flunked Geek Class in school. (I didn't have any glasses to tape up so was too embarrassed to take the class)

I had some tard using a proxy server in China trying to bust open my computer. It's a passtime for fourty year olds still living with their moms nowadays. If the IP isn't one of the HTC servers, then yes, someoe is trying to plant malicious code on your computer. Just let it keep blocking them and scan regularly; all should be well.

I had understood from Skuzzy that playing AH was "safe" and there was no need to keep running AV and firewall while playing, in fact it may give you connection problems.

AH is safe; the internet isn't. If someone (read person) is poking at his computer, it would be dumb to shut off the A/V and firewall. If something (read malware) is getting something to poke his computer, a virus scan and AdAware/SpyBot scan would be best. I didn't have time to type that before.

If you hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and switch to the Networking tab (XP Home, select "Task Manager" in Pro) you can see how much the internet is being accessed. If you close all of your windows and there isn't any activity for a couple minutes, it's pretty safe to say that you can disable the FW/AV after a good AdAware/Spybot cleaning. If it has activity, sometyhing is using the internet without you and opens the gate to the hacktards.

Well hmmmm.............

I was using a firewall. Had every now and then little warps and freezes. Nothing major mind you. Just little ones and then only occasionally.

Disabled my anti-virus and my firewall.

Worked GREAT for about 2 weeks.

Then I was suddenly having some MAJOR burps, freezes, and warps!!!

Said *@%! this was good but now is actually worse then with.

So I re-enable just the firewall. Problem stopped but checked the logs and for nearly 1 week there after someone using a Brazillian address was trying to access my computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally sent the info into the firewall provider.

The firewall was blocking the attempts.

Decided I could live with the very small stuff that happened when the firewall was active.

NOTE: the entire time I was applying adaware, spybot S&D, etc. ....

Guys,

Why not get a hardware firewall (like a Linksys "DSL" Router) and it let take care of blocking the external attempts to get into your computer?

Even if you only have one computer on your broadband connection, you never need to worry about having another program running in the background when you fly.

Because the scans and such give me something to do between things. I already have NIS, AdAware, ect, why spend more on hardware? Besides, not much room for anything else in here.

Because a Software Firewall can allow you to set rules and see whats being broadcast From your PC as well.

Ducky, Can't you set it to just log these instead of popping up a dialog box, Thats how Sygate Personal Firewall works for me..

I may not have been clear on my actual concern with this.
I use the sheilds, I do the scans, I try to play safe. I have run a fairly clean ship for going on 9yrs now. I am not TOO worried about someone attacking my machine, I don't have THAT much to steal in the first place.
My concern at first posting this was to see if it was just me, a normal part of the game, or maybe someone else knew something.
I have heard people say it was safe to drop the firewall and virus protection while in the game. I am begining to conclude from my experience that thinking may not be the smartest. If HTC says its safe, I would be interested to hear the why and how. I would not recomend it myself. The attacks are not coming ONLY while in the game as I have had attacks at other times, but only once or twice in my memory. Inside the game however, I get them pretty regularly.
Thanks for the posts. Don't worry about me, I try to play it safe. I don't usually have any trouble.

Well, I'd rather have a crash-proof, un-turn-off-able hardware firewall blocking attempts to get into my system, whether I am playing a game or not.

No chance for burps, hiccups, or background processes to interfere with playing with a hardware firewall.
