Was seafire IIc nerfed too?
« on: November 30, 2005, 11:35:33 PM »
I think the seafire was nerfed in climb rate and speed department.  Seafire used to climb like the old spit 5 but now it climbs like an P-40B!:( :cry

Both the SpitVb and Seafire were lowered back to their original AHI 12+ boost from 16+ that it was at for the last year or so.

The Seafire Mk IIc climbs at 2,750fpm, 250fpm less than the Spitfire Mk Vb due to the naval equipment weighing it down.

It is funny to out climb one in a Mosquito Mk VI which, with 50% fuel, climbs at 3,500fpm initially.

Yup, it's something that really needs to be 'fixed'.

Only the 1st 110 Seafire IIc built from May 42 had the Merlin 46, the remaining 262 built from Nov 42 had the Merlin 32 (L IIc).
Even then all the Merlin 46 were retrofitted with the Merlin 32.

Ours should be a L IIc with the Merlin 32.

What we have at the moment is -
The lowest produced true Seafire (IIc), in its rarest configuration (Merlin 46).

Main difference is the Merlin 32 produces 1645hp and 16lbs vs the Merlin 46 1470hp and 12lbs

I believe the only model change would be a 4 blade prop in-place of the 3 blade one.

Numbers built -
Conversions from Spit Vb
Seafire IIb - Merlin 45 - 166

Built to new Seafire specs
Seafire IIc - Merlin 46 - 110 (all retrofitted to L IIc with Merlin 32)
Seafire LIIc - Merlin 32 - 262
Seafire III - Merlin 55M - 1220
Seafire XV - Griffon VI - 390 (cross between Seafire III and Spit XII)

Seafire climb at +12 lbs

10k in 4 min
15k in 6 min
20k in 8.25 min

F4F climb

10k in 5 min
15k in 7.5 min
20k in 10.5 min

P-40B climb

10k in 6 min
15k in 9 min
20k in 12.33 min

100 gas no DTs from the runway 0 alt start.

Seafire is at least 25 percent faster than a F4F and almost 50 percent faster than a P-40B (it should be), and not far off its published #s. It was never a super climber, but thats respectable.

As for the +16 lbs boost I raised it with HTC but got no response, I would like to see it at that level as I think thats the late 42-43 boost level as per the docs and sources, but I dont see the point in raising the issue more than once, Im sure they have reviewed the data and have seen the posts on it. Its their call.

Only built with Merlin 46 from April to Oct 42, from Nov 42 the Merlin 32 was used exclusively.
Trying to find data on when they started converting the earlier Merlin 46 equipped aircraft (110 in total) to Merlin 32.
