New Movie: Mustang Rhapsody
« on: December 04, 2005, 10:16:46 PM »
I've posted a movie on the 412th website.  Please visit:
http://brauncomustangs.org/site

There are 2 versions - a medium-res version and a high-res version.  Refer to the instructions on the website to play the movie.

This was a little exercise in creating a movie using footage of the 412th in actual action set to music.  It's my first attempt at a completed short digital film to experiment with some of the capabilities of the AH film viewer combined with some other movie making tools.

Hope you enjoy it!

This has to rank as one of the best I have seen to date. The music was perfect!

The large file is much better, After watching about 30 sec of the smaller file I deleted it and waited on the large to DL. It was worth the wait.

Thanks for taking the time. Great work sir!!

Yes it is definitely worth the big download! It's a really awesome movie, even at full screen (1280x1024) it doesn't loose anything! And the scenes are just lovely, well coordinated with the music, great kills shots.

Nice work, Tango, looking forward for another movie from you! :aok

This film ranks with the best of the best, such as spade's duel between a 109 and p38. The high res version is a must because the quality of it places your film alongside the best of the IL-2 films, such as Maximum Bob's tribute to Mitchell's Spitfire, or Come With Me.

Awesome job. Which tools did you use? Fraps? Virtual Dub? Vegas?

Oh yeah: I would never have dreamed of choosing Queen as the music. Inspired choice for sure.

I'm a mutant, so it's three thumbs up (that's all I got, sorry).

eh?

I dug this one up since I've been thinking about making a new AH movie.

Old thread but I didn't see your comments Eh and wanted to reply.  Very nice compliments to be put up there with "Mitchell's Spitfire" or "Come With Me" though personally I don't think my little video compares to them!  Those are some very professionally done videos.  Thanks for your comments!

Tools: Fraps, Virtual Dub, and MS Moviemaker.  I'm not sure I want to invest in Vegas or Premiere for messing around unless I was serious into movie-making with videos from my mini-dv camcorder etc.

On the choice of music, "Bohemian Rhapsody" has always been one of my favorite songs.  I thought it meshed well with what I wanted to achieve with the film since it is a bit operatic and meshed well with a collection of different types of action clips.  It really has a beginning and build up to a climax and then an ending which I think provided a nice foundation to act as a loose story to mesh a bunch of different flying clips together into something cohesive.  My preference regarding these videos is definitely to try and tell stories (however loose that they may be) with some emotional punch or connection to them.  I thought the Queen song provided a base for that.

Good film.

:aok

Approximately how long did this take to edit?  Did you take a few days of breaks inbetween?  Did you have to go back a few times and re-render it because you didn't like a certain shot or sound?

<-----Interested in the editing process. :)

It took quite a long time to edit but I'm not sure it was quite a sequential process.  I didn't have all the film clips assembled to to begin with.  I did have a bit of a story outline to match the mood of them music to guide me and  I already had a list of ah films selected for the different parts I wanted to include.  I would take a particular scene and work on it until I was happy with it.  That consisted of:

  • Working in AHfilmviewer with with the specific scene and playing around with various camera angles etc.
  • Once the shot was planned out I would capture with Fraps
  • Once captured in Fraps I brought it into Virtualdub to apply a variety of filtering effects
  • Once done with Virtualdub I went into MS Movie Maker to assemble the series of shots I may have taken for a particular scene and then trim and edit the clips to match the music and timing

All told I'd say it took me a good 3 weeks to do it all working on it for an average of 2-4 hours a day.

Hope that helps!

bennytree:

It's buried on the frontpage.  Here are the links:

Mustang Rhapsody - Medium Res

Mustang Rhapsody - High Res
(Hi-Res version requires a divx codec.  Also it's 220 MB so you'll need to do a "save as" and download it to your PC to view it vs. having it stream from the net).

Very cool information Dtango.

I'm curious about this virtualdub.  What kind of video filters did you use for your film?  What version of virtual dub did you use?

Kudos on using Windows Movie Maker, for I can't seem to get what I want with that program.
