Wireless Dial Up?

So ..need to cover about a mile of distance..Phone company will not run a line ..unlesss we pay for it

Is there a wireless unit ..similar to how a home wirlesss phone works?


Have the wireless unit atchd to the phone poll...a mile away? with receiver at house?

That's the first time I've heard of ANYTHING like that entering someone's head...wireless transmissions are usually lucky to pass a couple walls, much less a mile... Sorry, but it's funny...

I know a guy who is in the same situation, but the distance was 22 miles.  
He got satellite.

I was reading in pop-sci a few months back that you could mount a parabolic antenna (theirs was made with cardboard coated in aluminum foil) on the antenna of a standard wi-fi router and get 3-4 times the distance out of it, but it narrows your signal to one direction.

maybe with one made from better quality materials, and putting another on the other end of the signal you might approach the distance you are going for.  of course if you'd need a fairly clear path to make it that far.

after you go through all that though you may find that it would have been cheaper just to buy the wire.

maybe someone smarter than me could hook you up with some sort of relay station (or stations) to hand off the signal from your PC to the router.

whats the range of a 'G' wi-fi system anyway?

well if we do wire..we need to either trench it or hang it

trench it..im thinking we need to bury in a pipeline.. pvc or somthn..and follow the path of the road..wich does wind a bit



it woudl be better i think to hang it..but then we need to put poles in..

I know we can use the satelitte phone ..but still get a delay in it..

he just order soem sort of vonnage service to see if its to much of a delay using satelite internet for connect

I suggest if you don't have any knowledge of a subject - keep out of it, it makes you like kind of ummm stupid (especially when you mock him).

Wifi units with external aerial support will easily acheive what he needs.

looks like Vulcan found what you need.  if you do run the wire put it in the ground.  cheaper, easier, and more reliable.  less trouble from weather or trees falling into the wire.

to put it in the ground you can rent one of those 'ditch-witch' rigs (like a big chainsaw for the dirt), and conduit is cheaper than poles.

I installed a product at work----runs wireless TCP/IP up to 25 kilomters---these folks use it for live video, as video drags down their hardwire network--pretty much line of site tho

Alittle more than a mile

If you pull wire to solve the problem, I also suggest underground as the easiest, most economical means.

However, I would suggest you try a vibrating plow, rather than a Ditch Witch trencher.

The vibrating plow will leave a nearly invisible mark, no soil surcharge to dispose of, and move very quickly through most soil types.  Usually used for pulling irrigation lines without damaging the surface.  Since you can get direct-burial cable, you won't need conduit & fittings.

Give 'er a try...and Good Luck.  

PS...don't forget to consider the possibility of interference or eavesdropping on any wireless setup.  It's still, at heart, a basic radio station that someone else can tune to, if they choose.

We've got a data over radio experimental system about to be tested in the next month or so... distance 480 miles. Should be good enough for email and small amounts of graphics lke a webcam.

If you have LOS there isn't an issue, its just about getting the transmitter unit and reciever dish aligned and then pumping enough power through it.

The company I used to work for had some success with the Cisco Aironet line of wireless bridges.

Depending on what antenna you use, this one will give you 13 miles (21 km) @ 54 Mbps or 23 miles (37 km) @ 9 Mbps.
