tailgating

Usually I let tailgaters go past often before they even think of getting too close. It's not worth the effort to play with them. I rarely get tailgated anyway because usually I do a lot of over taking.  Sometimes though there is nothing you can do about it.  In that situation I have been known to flip on my fog lamp. A few minutes of staring at that eye searing red lamp soon cures their enthusiasm.

I had a lucky escape recently. We were in a line of cars but there were no overtaking opportunities. Behind me was an SUV who while not tailgating as such was really too close for comfort and driving a bit too aggressively. I couldn't let him through and in any case he was going nowhere with the line of cars ahead. But I kept an eye on his antics.

The road led into a series of tightish curves and the line of cars spread out a bit.  Suddenly the car ahead braked and only then switched on the indicator for a turn in the middle of a bend. I braked hard but I was far enough behind and wasn't particularly bothered. I would stop fairly easily. But then I remembered the SUV. He was just out of sight in the last bend and I just knew he was never going to stop in time. So to my wife's surprise. I floored it and shot through the smallish gap the stopped car had left on the inside. Just in time too. I watched events unfold in my mirror. The SUV appeared and he braked very hard and tried to avoid the car. But it was no good and he hit it.  Not too hard luckily. I could see the surprised look on the faces of the car's driver and passenger as first they were pushed back in their seat then forward against their belts. This all took place in the space of a few seconds.

A minor fender bender and at first I felt a bit smug about my quick reactions and even slightly guilty that I dodged a bullet with my name on it.   But soon a cold chill ran through me when I realised I had actually avoided quite a serious accident. You see, if I had stopped behind the car. We would have been that much further up the road when the SUV arrived and we would have been hit at a much higher speed and then possibly pushed very hard into the car in front. Nasty indeed.
My wife, of course, was almost completely oblivious to most of the incident except for my sudden acceleration past the stopped car and thinks I exaggerated the whole thing.  Typical. :furious

I don't see what the problem is with letting the guy go by.

If he wants to drive faster than you let him by. He will get a ticket if there is radar ahead so that is even a bonus.

Why block him?

I think people who refuse to move over are really angry inside at some level.

I plugged in the 1,000,000 candlepower spotlight I usually keep in the boat, handed it to Rick, and told him to show this guy our brights.

It worked, but I'd never do it again, and regret(sorta)doing it then.

I've seen that happen and I'm happy when it does.  My favorite was there was a state trooper (white car) ahead off to the right side of the road with his door cracked open and no blue-lights on.  He was maybe 3/4 mile ahead and I saw him with plenty of time so I let off the gas and waited for the radar/laser detector to start chirping, screaming, MISSILE LOCK.

The guy behind me is furious, swearing at me and right on my bumper.  I slide over to the right lane which is going the speed limit and just as the guy accelerates past a semi (maybe back up at 80 by that time) our state patrol friend closes his door and switches on the blue lights.  Stick a fork in em...he's done!

I putted on by at a mere 65mph and shortly thereafter was cooking down the road at 78 again. :)

Ahem... I've only used a couple of different doppler radar guns. None of them LOCK. ;)

They simply display the highest velocity available. On the display, it's not so much as a lock as a freeze that stops the constant display of changing velocities.

I doubt that many are intentionally blocking. If I'm on the left lane of a multi lane road, why would I give way if it reguires me to slow down(these are the most usual tailgating situations)? If they want to speed, it's fine by me but don't expect me to slow down for them(usually driving 10% over the limit myself, but I still don't tailgate). If I'm on a single lane road and overtaking is forbidden, I do slow down if they are unable to keep a proper distance. Truckers are my favourite targets as they tailgate(and pose a serious hazard) alot and get really pissed.

I said Missile Lock because of the god-awful noise it makes.  There's no getting around it...but the urgency is more like that of a missile being targeted your way rather than a speeding ticket aimed between your eyes.

Yeah sometimes I feel like I'm a scene from Flight of the Intruder when I come across a cop using a Laser who's left his Ka band radar on as well. First the radar detector starts chirping, then he hits me with laser and that starts going off. The Jammer head/sensors are mouned in the front grill and above the rear license plate, and the radar detectors mounted high on the windscreen (gives best range for radar), so if the cops far enough away for the beam spread I get the laser jammer bleatign AND the radar alternately reporting Ka band and laser.

Sounds like some North Vietnamese missile battery has just locked me up :D ... now all need is some HARMs

Never really tried this, but it's an idea.

Just remember that not only does Lazerr fly with a mouse (on the desktop not in his pocket) but he also drives using a mouse:)

Yeah I tried an escort portable, they suck for Ka detection. I returned it and got a Bel. The difference between the detection on Bels and Escorts is negligable, but at the time the Bel had better programmable features (I run highway mode, no K band, no X band).

I've got the Bel LaserPro for the jamming. BTW, if anyones thinking of buying, I brought all my gear from this guy: http://www.radarbusters.com/  . Best service from any online store I've dealt with, let me return the Escort and was awesome to deal with.

The sucker got even more impatient and darted out of his lane to get ahead.

Anyone like this strategy? Anyone have any better ones?

OK.

Here is some of the TRUE stuff I have done in the past:

1. )  Brakes (yawn)

2. )  One of my buddies took one bite out of an apple and I grabbed it and watched the tool 'gatin me swerve for nothing.  I aimed for the base of the windshield.  Took him 10 miles to clean his windshield.  He backed off.

3. ) One of my fav's was / is to move my driver's mirror to bring HIS headlamps, into his eyes.  They'll back off.  They do NOT come closer.  Obviously, this is effective in nighttime siteations.

4. ) The right / left turn is old favorite that I haven't used in 10+ years.

I'm 32, married and with a kid.  Obviously, I don't get as daring as I did as a youngin.   However, every now and then the No.3 get's pulled back up (I move over when the family is with me).
