VF-17 squad
« on: January 25, 2006, 01:01:09 PM »
As this mainly concerns the AvA...........

Please see this thread in the Squadrons forum.

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=169573

We are re-forming the squad and currently recruiting!  I'd like to see this thing grow again.  Lots of history in the VF-17, and I dont want to see it die off like some of the other old squads have.

Thanks for your time.

Reschke has RL issues to deal with and hasnt been online in some time.  It will be some time yet before he is able to spend any significant time online with the squad.  Rather than see it die, he is transferring CO powers to me and we will try to rebuild without him.

Have no fear.  Reschke and any of the other former members of the squad always have a home here.  Any time he feels he has the time, the hot seat is his for the taking too.  :)

Yeah what he said. We have been going through our biggest year to date in the 6 years I have been with this company and now one of our largest customers has offered up a a buyout/merger now and its getting close to deal time and plenty of us here are worried that they might decide to cut jobs on the new guys or worse and try to move us up to Wisconsin from Alabama...That just isn't going to fly in my book!

BUT like I told SA2 when its time I will be back at some point but I will still have a hand in rebuilding the site and helping behind the scenes. Although I don't know about stepping back into the hot seat as CO for any stretch of time. I've had my fill of it to last a while.

Erm.... your website is taken over by some advertising page. Looks like the domain expired and it got snagged (there are companies that make money doing nothing but that, stealing domains).

But judging by the "Jolly Rogers" I'm guessing you have a preference to corsairs or US naval fighters in general?

That is correct Krusty.  This is a good website on the squadron history.

http://www.jolly-rogers.com/

I'm sure Reschke still has the original website pages, and I have access to a web-hosting service.  I'd like to check into the ownership of the old domain and see if we can get it back, but if not the website will live again at a new home.

*Edit*

Just for giggles, the writeup of the original squad.

Quote
Fighting Squadron 17 was formed in Norfolk, Virginia on 1 January 1943, and selected to fly the new Vought F4U-1 Corsair, a gull-winged fighter built around a powerful Pratt-Whitney 18 cylinder radial engine.

VF-17 was assigned to USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), but landing problems caused the Navy to question the Corsair’s carrier-worthiness. The Jolly Rogers worked closely with Vought engineers to successfully modify the F4U, rather than switch to the F6F Hellcat.

In October 1943, VF-17 was based on New Georgia in the Solomon Islands, where it first flew F4Us in combat during the invasion of Bouganville. Squadron pilots shot down six Zeke fighters and damaged another six on the first day of the battle with the loss of only one Corsair.

During the Battle of the Solomon Sea in November 1943, VF-17 was credited with 18.5 confirmed kills and 7 damaged Japanese planes, with zero losses of their own aircraft..
The big push came in March 1944 when, aboard USS Hornet, the squadron took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In fighter sweeps from 18 March to 17 April 1945, the pilots of VF-17 downed 146.5 Japanese aircraft.

During its tour, the Jolly Rogers shot down 8 Japanese planes for every Corsair lost and produced twelve aces, more than any other navy squadron.

Original VF-17 site

The one in the signature was the latest one that was done. The one linked here was the very first one we did. The other one had the plug pulled because it was getting to time intensive and costing a little more than was budgeted.

I don't know what "Group W Bench" means. Enlightenment?

As for a webpage, you have somebody to design one for you? The thing about time-intensive "avoidance" in a web design is to NOT have daily news updates. Been there. Couldn't bother to keep doing that (lol). Make it an as-is webpage where you update the pertinent information, but leave it to a forum or e-mail system to get up-to-date info.

Eh, you probably already know all this, if so "sorry".

As you said Krusty....BTDT (Been There Done That) its a biatch thats for sure. That is why I am still glad that the old ancient VF-17 site was still up and running. Its a littler harder to deal with rather than a pure own your own domain site but hell its free!

Haven't heard from Cmorum in a long time, Najdorf posted on here a few months ago that he was coming back but under a different name. Slash was trying to grab him for their group. As for JconradH and LtBlogs I have only seen blogs posting in the aircraft forum but nowhere else and I don't know about JconradH.
