Oldman,

None of the "planned" escorts were in Spitfires.  The 56th and 78th Fighter Groups were in P-47D11s (historical), the 325th and 4th Fighter Groups were in P-51Bs (historical) and the 367th Fighter Group was in P-38Js (historical).

Any Spitfires encountered where either people not part of the original briefing but joined after launch, or our "Reception" Escort (downed pilots) which were to up Spit IXs from coastal airfields to cover the bombers crossing the channel.

RAF Squadrons (especially those recently equipped with P-51Bs) were historically used to cover returning bombers.

Trust me I went to great effort to make this as historical as possible.

What should count is that if the Luftwaffe tried to pursue across the channel, they get met by swarms of RAF fighters..no matter the type, really :)

IIRC, the Luft stopped  pursuit long before they came close to RAF owned airspace.

880 had three pilots in P47s and flew with shifty's crew.

We were glad to have you guys along.

I have never seen that many airplanes in one peice of sky. Probably because I don't play in the MA, but it was still impressive. There were so many that I could see but had no icon contact on. I remember seeing the text from the 56th P-47s that they had made contact , then seeing them warn us that some were OTW to the bomber stream.

Then all of the sudden we start hearing 4th FG P51 pilots calling out 109s and 190s on vox. I'm looking over where the 4th FG is and all I can see are dots. Then in zooms one of them and it's a FW-190 . It made a pass rolled inverted and was gone down and away.

I didn't get a shot at it, there was nobody shot down on that pass , or even any damage to the B-17s or the FW-190. However that was one of the coolest sights I've ever seen on AH. It was right out of all those books you read.

Sortie 1
I went airborn in a 110,climed up to 32k.That's when I spotted a very large formation of aircraft .I started my firs pass from 32k.The fighter cover was very extensive,from above 32k down to 23k where I engadged the bomers.My pass thru them netted me my 1st b17 kill,but I fell victim to the massive amount of lead flying in the air.It chewed up the 110 and caused it to fall from the sky. I rode it down to 3k then punched out for a safe bailout.

Sortie 2
 This time I climed into the sky in a Fw190a8.This time I caught the bombers and avoidede thier escorts and netted my 2nd b17 of the night .I mannaged to survive this time but I had to disengadge due to low fuel and was forced to land at the radar factory for a safe landing.

Sortie3

This time I also climed into a Fw190a8 and proceeded to assist fellow squadmates in a low level furbal at the tree tops.This is where I netted a lone P47 while he tried futialy to escape the wrath of the faster 190 while I closed in and pelted him with 30mm rounds and put him into the tree tops.


 So I chalked up 3 more kills for Jg54 that night.In closing I found it to be an interesting evening with a K/D ratio of 3/1
