I always thought it was similar to "the whole enchelada" or the "whole works" or "the whole ball of wax" rather than a description of effort.

Assuming I mean the physical exertion of a single individual with my use of the word effort is incorrect. As a simple analogy (and to avoid a longwinded zazenesque post), consider the phrase, "the war effort".

And this concludes another random hijack. This is a serious post, and I'd appreciate if you all would help keep it on topic.

Stang: The best guess of folks more educated than I, is that it was a final play and the "whole nine yards" was the last 9 to touchdown, and it was spawned by a commentator "they went the whole nine yards!!" <-- something like that
