Ghost or PC Relocator?
« on: March 25, 2006, 12:51:59 AM »
Got my new system home, but now I'm trying to figure out the best way to migrate to it. In the past with older Windows versions it was pretty easy to just Ghost a drive and pop it in the new box. But...   presently running XP Home, the old system is IDE based, the new one is SATA.

I've been researching the Ghost method and have found a lot of horror stories. Just found out about a program called PC Relocator that looks promising, but can't find a lot of info on it.  I also use the systems for work, so creative "iffy" things aren't an option.

All that being said, what's going to be the easiest way to get everything to the new box?

When I do a new HD or system I dopn't bother with ghosting things over. Do you have a second HD on the system? A small one perhaps? If so just copy all of your important files like documents and pix over to the second drive. Back them up if you will.

When you format the new drive (or the old one with errors) reload the programs back onto it fresh and update them. You can transfer back your docs and pix afterwards. Trying to ghost programs can lead to a lot of frustration. To me it's simply not worth it. If you do not have a second drive go get a flash drive USB unit. They are incredibly cheap now (2 gigs under $100.00!!!!) to store or back up your docs.

For those programs I down load I can copy the install files to the flash drive as well and reinstall on the formatted HD.

I used software called True Image by Acronis many times, it worked great.
