Paranoia or Precaution?
« on: October 17, 2001, 01:34:00 PM »
I haven't received my snail mail at work yet because of new protocols here in the school district due to the Anthrax "outbreak."  Here is my mail being screened for the deadly spores.

Notice the sacrifice she is making for the rest of us.  If a powerdery substance is found, she'll have to throw that Diet Coke away!   ;)  Seriously, she has to use gloves and the surgical mask in a locked room.  If a substance is found, the ventilation to the room is immediately shut off, and risk management is notified, who in turn notifies the authorities (probably via 911).  There is a door to the outside, so I assume the secretary then egresses out that way.  Students are not allowed to handle any mail or packages now (we don't have students at our particular building, so that's a moot point for my department.)

No substances were found today.

Anyways, is the school board here over-reacting, or are they just being cautious?  They haven't recommended we open our mail at home under the same conditions...

Doesn't hurt to be cautious, but if there is a return vent in that room, then what she is doing is not going to matter anyways.

Incidently, if you inhale Anthrax, you have 5 days to live, if you ingest Anthrax, you have 3 days to live.  Tell her to dump the Diet out.  :)

I would think that, as in anything, there needs to be at least some risk anaylsis done before jerking your knee.

The first question would be:  Why would we be a target(Is there a credible risk)?

The second one would be:  Is the cost of the measures worth the available reduction of the risk?

The third one, assuming that the first 2 required it, would be how do we mitigate the threat and continue to do business.

As an example, while the Unabomber was active, were measures taken?  Some were, by entitites that presumed themselves to be a target, but by and large, he was not deemed a threat to the general population.

He did a lot more damage than this scare has so far, remember.  The half-assed measures illustrated above are silly and will do no better than make someone feel proactive, and cost time and money.

FYI that surgical mask has pores on the scale of 1000 times the size of the lowest grade Anthrax spore.

just received this from division:
FYI, attached is the new mail handling procedure guidelines which are effective beginning immediately.  From today forward, Mindy will sort and open all mail in our mailroom, while wearing a mask and gloves.  When she is sorting the mail, the door to the mailroom will be closed.  NO ONE IS TO ENTER THE MAILROOM WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED.

Thanks for your cooperation.

I think she's doing a smart thing.  I wish the freakin senate would go home like the house did.  Just imagine if our congress all go anthrax and 1/2 of em died?!?!?! WTF would happen then?  Emergency elections??

They should link up on the net or something w/ video phones or Roger Wilco  :) and do the debating/voting like that for a while.

 Then we should nuke iraq...
