Dual boot with Win2k
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:46:42 AM »
I acquired a HD with a fresh install of Windows 2k on it.  More than once I have heard how much better it runs than XP, and I'm willing to give it a shot.  I have almost no experience with 2k though.  When it came out I was working on either Windows 98 or NT4.0, only the last 2 months of my previous job did they get around to installing Windows 2k on our server.  I've never used it on a home computer.

Are there any specific problems I'll encounter trying to install it as a dual boot?  Problem here is, I dont have an install CD, just the HD with the OS installed on it.  I can manually edit the boot.ini in Windows XP I suppose.  What specific SP's will I need to download right off the bat?  The Win2k I remember was not real friendly with lots of hardware.  That must have changed at some point.

At any rate, any advice would be appreciated.

Personally I don't think Win 2k runs better than XP, but that's a matter of personal opinion. :)

Because you don't have the install CD for Win 2k, you can't install both on one drive. You need to partition the drive so each OS has it's own partition. But when you do that you will lose everything that's already on the drive.

You can however install XP if you add another hard drive and let XP determine the boot menu.
Most of the people you meet in life are like slinkies. Pretty much useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

w2k not better then xp ... oh come on ...

install the hd with w2k on it ... get it all running ... now install the 2nd hard drive and do a install of xp while directing the install to that 2nd hd ... now it should end up with a chose os when starting up ... thats how mine works

for hardware the only thing i have problem with is printer drivers ...

I dont care about printers or anything else, this is going to be gaming only.  XP will take care of my home computing needs.  I had a W98 dual boot for some time, and finally destroyed the HD with 98 on it.  Then I had a XP dual boot setup with a stripped down version for gaming, and it worked ok.  I'd be much happier with an OS that doesnt try to run my life for me though when it comes to gaming.

2k will remain on its own HD.  For my hardware, I am pretty sure all of them said XP/2000 on them, so they work for both right?  No issues there?

if it seams to stall out ..... just wait it ussually works thru it ..
w98 id be rebooting ...

My "gaming" version of XP had 15 processes running at boot, and it worked great for gaming.  Problem was XP needs alot of that junk in order to even manually download updates.  When I went to try to install SP2 on it, it was a nightmare and I ended up having to re-enable several processes and it still didnt work right.  I was never able to get it back to as streamlined as it had been before.  I really thought hard about reinstalling 98 on another HD, but then the thought of going through all the hassle of hunting down drivers for everything was too much.  Then I got this fresh copy of 2k ........... I'm going to try installing everything tonight and see if I can get it running acceptably, then I'll worry about trying for the dual boot setup.
