A pic of the bare metal Seafire!!!
« on: May 26, 2006, 06:45:53 AM »
Holy crap, I found a pic of it!!!!

Krusty got me thinking about corrosion etc and how it would be ill-advised.

Will change stbd codes to correct D*58 instead of D5*8

Should have been added to other thread but screwed up, oh well.

Changed stbd code, and deleted the black ID stripe from the very top of rudder.

This should be what I send in, unless anyone sees anything (poss spinner black and not red?, also tempted to ditch the gun port patches).

Looks fantastic, well done.

My only observation would be that the d*58 marking in the photo looks less well aligned than your version.  If anything, yours looks too neat.

Very minor observation on what is a cracking skin...

OK -
Misaligned the codes, lost the gun patches.

Tried to duplicate the aircraft view.

If you look at the image, you can see a slight discoloration by the nearest gun port. There might have been patches.

EDIT: The opposite wing on the plane behind it looks like it has a gunport patch as well. I'd leave them on.

I think the spinner would be black. Look at all the other spinners. They're a different color. This spinner looks almost identical to the anti-glare patch, so I'd go with black.

EDIT: If red is showing up as white, then that spinner definitely isn't red. The gun port patches are red in your skin. The patches show up as white in the photo, so I'd assume all but the BMF plane had red spinners. Its clearly got a different color.

Will re-instate the gun patches.

RE: Spinner - The other ones on the rear planes are white, not red.
Which doesn't help decide whether front one is black or red :( .

well if the gunport patches are red (historically) and they show up as white, then if the BMF spinner was red, it would also show as white. It's not the same shade as the patches, so it can't be red. My logic. Take it or leave it :)

Ah but here's the spanner in your logic -

The spinners on the other aircraft are white.

Gunport patches on spits have been other colors -

SAAF used blue patches.
U.S. used white patches

looked back at the original, I think there isn't any patches on it.

Original is here, see what you think.

Took me forever to find it, but here's a profile of at least one other bird from that squadron that was natural metal.  The Spinner is black on this one so I'd probably go with that.

Hope it helps

Funnily enough Dan was thinking about it -

Red spinners were usually used as a theatre marking for birds in the Med or N. Africa, so re-did it as black.

Just leaves the gun patches?

Current status -
1) Black spinner
2) Redid anti glare where it meets cockpit, looks curved not the slanted line I had.
3) More change to the sqn codes.

P.S. Shinyness problem on the wings will be fixed next patch :) .

I'd leave it like it is without the doped on patches over the gun ports.

The other question I have is whether it's D5-8 or D5-B

All the other photos seem to show D5 -(letter)

I don't see any other photos showing D5-(number)

I've seen the photo you posted somewhere before and clearer, but I can't for the life of me find it in my stuff.  Gonna dig some more.

You in a rush on this one or do I have time to check around some more?  I work both Saturday and Sunday but I thought I might check with other sources on this one and see if I can turn up a better picture

Dan I am pretty sure it's going to turn out D5-B.

Kev that is an amazing work of art, all your skins are.

You should do a Ki-84 skin sometime ! I'm sure it would rule !
