« on: May 31, 2006, 01:43:15 PM »
so i parked on yellow lines in town to buy some lunch from a sandwich shop, coronation chicken and lettuce, and 2 mins later was back at the car. the bastard had been and written up the ticket, and legged it before i could disable him! £60 fine

so already having a bit of a tight day i threw the ticket down the drain and drove home.

5 weeks encounting and still no follow up.

Hehehe

Not sure how it works there, but I can envision a similar set of steps ..........

You'll never hear another word about it, and 2 years from now you'll be driving along and be speeding just a bit, get pulled over.  Maybe you witness a crime and the investigating officer takes your information and checks your ID.  Maybe someone commits a crime against you even, officer checks your ID.  Whatever.  At some point in your life, they will meet up with you and run your ID.  Officer finds you have an outstanding warrant for your arrest, he puts the cuffs on you, drags you to jail, has your car towed (if applicable).  You have to post bond, pay the warrant fees, pay to get your car out of impound and spend 5 or 6 times what you would have if you had just paid the ticket.

Way to stand up and protest lol.  :)

Ya know what grabs me?

The course of action you describe is what would happen to me.. or you. But not to an illegal immigrant.

They will gladly lock me up, impound my car... for an unpaid traffic ticket. But an illegal immigrants criminal status is intentionally overlooked.

In LA, they double the amount of the ticket after a month or so, then eventually it goes onto your credit, I think.

in San Francisco once, parked downtown on a Sunday afternoon. Cars all over the place on street. Figured was ok since it was a sunday. When got back, had a $50 parking ticket. That is four $50 tickets, one for each motorcycle stall that my car covered. $200!!!!! Tried to protest in court, and they took my money anyways. After that, I never ever park on street in SF, always in garage.

heres the trick to beating them.

True story.

I once had about $500 worth of parking tickets. Now this was about 23 years ago. so you can imagine just how many tickets this had to be.

The street I lived on had parking meters as it was right across the street form a hospital
Those of you familiour with Rutgers University know Robert Wood Johson Medical Center (formally known ad Middlesex hospital) And little Albany street.

Well I was working a job where we were working nights for several months.
so I was sleeping all day and working all night.
Well during the day my car would be parked on the street. And we had this real jack arse meter maid who gave EVERYONE a ticket no matter what.

that is where the very bulk of my tickets were.

Well sometimes you couldnt find a parking sot there so I had to park around the corner in a "no parking" zone

This town being New Brunswick NJ. the last thing you wanted to do was park your car too far from your house. Or Jamals or Hirams all night car borrowing service may decide your car looks like a good one to take for a joyride.
So I would park right around the corner. and get tickets

Ok So I ignored em.
After a while I received one of those "Show up for court and pay your tickets on such and such a date or go to jail" letters

So what did I do?
I went to the library.
Libraries have all sorts of legal books in em. including current laws.
Once you figure out this silly little cryptic code they all seem to go by you can figure out what your looking for and where to look.

I discovered that every resident in the town was entitled to one free parking space on the street they live.

Next stop. The court. The court date wasnt for another week But I went to the court anyway.
to talk to the prosecuter about my tickets.
He politely took my name. went in to the other room and pretty soon came back with a stack of tickets about 4 inches thick.

I then informed him of the law and the statute that says Im entitled to park on my street and that since I was working nights. it was unreasonable to expect me to have to get up every hour and half to drop money in the meter.
And that I was going to plead not guilty on all the tickets I receive on my street

But I was willing to  Plead guilty and pay for the tickets I got which werent on my street but around the corner on Easton Ave. Of which there were maybe 10 or 15

He looked at me. Looked at the stack of tickets. Looked at me, Looked at the stack of tickets again. Looked at me again. Shook his head and said "Dont worry about it. I'll take care of it.

Havent heard a word about them since.

So you see the trick is to get yourself a bunch of tickets you can legally beat. then go in and tell them your only going to plead guilty and pay the ones you cant beat.

Sorry to hear this, B@t. The last time I got one was in Institution Road, Marlow. The street parking used to have a 2-hour limit along there, and then they changed it to 1 hour. I didn't even know it had changed. Needless to say the TWs were out in force to catch people - like me.

The one before that was by the river in Henley. Some hanging baskets had overgrown and the flowers hung down, obscuring the no parking sign. I complained to the council when I got my ticket. All they said was that "the hanging baskets have now been removed" - which they were, after my ticket. I realised it was useless to protest, so paid up.

Hey Dred.....I have also felt the wrath of parking enforcement  in the great city of New Brunswick.  While attending Rutgers I racked up about 140 - 150 dollars worth of University issued parking summonses.  These are tickets issued by university employees to vehicles parked inproperly in Rutgers lots.  Now $140 - $150 dollars worth of tickets probably doesn't seem that bad except when you consider that when I went to school there most of the parking summonses carried a $2 fine.  So thats alot of tickets.

I tried my best to ignore them.  But the little trick Rutgers University pulls is that they will not let you register for next semesters classes until you pay your parking summonses.  So thats as far as my protests went.  I paid the fines. But held onto one of the summonses.  My next year whenever I parked in a lot that I didn't have a parking pass for, I just threw the summons I had kept up onto my window.  Made it through all of senior year without a ticket.

I did get a parking ticket from the New Brunswick parking authority while visiting my father in the Robert Wood Johnson emergency room.  I took the ticket to the violations bureau, told them what I had been doing there.  They made me sign an affadavit and threw out the summons.  Not bad.
