1 GIG or 2 GIG
« on: June 13, 2006, 04:26:31 PM »
Hello all , im looking at going to 2gigs of Ram and was wondering if anyone that has done the same, i would also like to know  what differences it made to gameplay in AH2 .

Ive been going back and forth on this issue due to the fact that i have 2X512Mb sticks , and to go with 2gigs i would have to really scrap the existing sticks to avoid some issues with my board and 4 sticks of ram .
The other issue is that its about halfway threw my upgrade cycle (1 year ) and odds are my next system will be DDR2 .

What do you guys think , does 2 gig really show a nice improvment , or should i just get by with 1 gig till the end of the year? .   38

Going to 1 gig will be a big increase in overall speed. I've heard that jumping from 1 to 2 isn't as noticable.

I debated going from 1 to 2 for a long time. Finally decided that since my old MB was an end of life product, it made more sense to just sink money into a whole new system starting off with 2 gig.

If there are computer swap meets in your area, you might also be able to sell or trade your current sticks in on bigger ones, if the current ones are name brand.

I went from 1 to 2 gig (4 x 512) but at the same time I went from ati 9800 to gs 7800 plus upgraded power supply  so I do not know how much each contributed to my performance boost ...
as cheap as ram is now, it can't hurt ..

From .5 to 1.5 made an astounding jump, but I don't know if going from 1 to 2 will be as astounding. I say if you're going to, do it. You can always keep the ram for years and years and not need to upgrade later.

2Gb will allow you to cache everything, even at 1024 texture sizes.

Noticeably less stutters and 'seems' smoother.

Word

I have an ATI All in Wonder 9700 card...plays the game ok, but certainly nothing special compared to newer cards.  Going from 1Gb to 2GB of system RAM made a big, noticeable difference in Aces High and other apps as well.

Boot time went way down too.

Its a tough time of year to upgrade...Ive been wanting to build a new system.  But with Windows Vista around the corner, graphic cards evolving into multiple GPUs on one card, more and more progress on flash ram hard drives (imagine a disk drive with no moving parts....a solidstate disk..nice!)...everytime I think about grabbing a few components to build a new syste, I pause.

Like you, I may just upgrade the video card to hold me over til later in the year  :)

Skuzzy stated that to use the high res package it takes at least 1.2 gig of RAM.  Also loading skins etc. into cache.

I'm using 2gig of dual channel Corsair Memory.  Graphics much smoother.

system
Athlon64 4000+ Clawhammer
2 gig Corsair (1gig sticks) matched dual channel runner on as ASUS A8V mobo.

the 4000+ also has 1024 Cache so that helps.

Thx for the replys.  LePaul, ive still got about 6 months before i hit my annual upgrade 8) , just thinking the extra gig might get me alittle farther down the road hehe .   Hajo , i ended up ordering  Corsair Xms again, went with 2X1gig c2 pro . Ive always had good luck with corsair , one of my current  sticks is almost 2 years old, and has been ran overclocked its whole life  8) .My 3700 also has a 1mb l2 cache , but im waiting to see how long it will hold out being clocked at 3ghz . So far so good . 38

For complete upgrades wait until Q1 2007.

Be two different ways you can go -

1) Intel dual core Conroe.

2) AMD AM2 dual core on the Torrenza platform. (2 dual core CPUs on the came mobo, with non ECC memory). 2nd socket doesn't have to have a cpu, could be a co-pro, GPU, or physics processor.

Each has their own advantages, and each require new components (mobo, memory)
