That is because you are ignorant of US laws.
While any private person or institution can choose who to admit to his/her/it's property, VMI is partially funded by US government and according to US law it must comply with the rules applicable to public institutions.
Since gender discrimination is illegal in US, VMI was in the wrong all that time.
VMI could have preserved their tradition if they had chosen to forgo the government grants funded by taxpayers money (many taxpayers are female, for your information). There are planty of all-girl or all-boy schools in US. Just that none of them are public or publicly subcidised.
The rule is simple here - you can make your own policies if you pay for them.
As for you considering that any tough women must be a dyke, meaning a lesbian, I can only make one conclusion - you must have had very strange selection of women in your life (mother, sister(s), girlfriend(s), wife(ves)) - were they all subservent, uninspired, weak, barefoot, in kitchen, always pregnant type? Hard to believe...
