Successful upgrade from A64 3700 to A64 X2 4400.

Opened case, swapped cpu, closed case.
Fired up windows.  It detected the second cpu.  Rebooted.
Installed dual core driver and optimizer, plus some MS hotfix I read about somewhere.  Rebooted a few times.

AH runs just fine.  Able to run 4x FSAA now, with FRs locked at 60 using 1280x1024 resolution and high-res textures.  6800GT AGP vid card, 2 gig ram.

Nice little upgrade overall, and fairly cheap too with the recent AMD price cuts.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I had installed the MS Hotfix previously & it worked most of the time, but every once in a while AHII would not run right, usually straightens out after a restart of AHII.

But since I installed AMD X2 Dual Core Optimizer patch I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever in any program or game.

See sig for setup.

AMD athlon 64x2 3800, with 2048 MBs of Ram
directX 9.0c
Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS
Soundblaster audigy
Windows XP home edition

I had the spinning clipboard before this fix was out, and I was advised to run the game on just one processor. Can anyone give me step by step directions on how to use the patch & get the dual processors running correctly?

Easy -

Download it and install it.

Windows doesn't save processor affinity (setting single core) so you shouldn't have to alter anything else.

Unless

You created a shortcut to the AH2.exe file and set it to run in Win98 compatibility  mode.
In which case just delete the shortcut, then make a new one, without setting any compatibility modes.

Install both patches -

1) Dual core optimizer
2) AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

Then reboot.
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
Asus M3N-HT mobo
2 x 2Gb Corsair 1066 DDR2 memory

Upgraded today, graphics card blew on my old PC.

I'm running as of today:

Athlon 64 x 2 3800+
1Gb RAM
Windows XP home with SP2

ASUS EN7300GS graphics card (a budget choice) 256Mb.

Downloaded the suggested patches, re-configured my joystick and all is working again., had terrible graphics flickering and stuff before the patches.

However, I find the framerates disappointing, they are 20-ish, that's worse than what I had before with my Athlon 1700+ (with much lower settings for graphics though).  AH2 suggest using 1024 textures but it could/should all be quite a bit faster I think. Any suggestions? My last PC I had for almost four years so my tweaking knowledge is obsolete.

I just put in an FX-60 & I'm running XP home sp2

I installed the new drivers, the optimizer & the hotfix listed on the AMD forums but I didn't do a clean install of Windows XP. I logged in for a while earlier to test it out & AHII ran pretty good, no spinning clipboard but it did freeze up on me one time. I've only had the CPU in for a few hours & this is my first dual core experience so I'm still tweaking it.

If I find the game freezes on me anymore I may end up doing a clean install of XP & go from there. Being my first dual core I am not really sure what I'm doing, I checked the task manager to see if both cores were working & I saw activity on both CPU graphs so I assume they are but the device manager lists them both as "AMD processor model unknown" so I may have a problem that I'm unaware of at the moment.

OK, I had a few issues. I re-formatted my hard drive & did a fresh install of windows & AHII, put all the drivers, optimizers & hotfixes back on & I haven't had so much as a hiccup yet. I even OC'd the CPU to 3.1GHZ & it's still chugging along smoothly in AHII. No problems at all.

There ya go Brenjen making me weaken!

Couldn't stand it no longer & just bought a FX-60 for my box.

I figured that I'd better get it now while the 939-pin prices are reasonable.

'Cause when the supply of these dwindle, the price is gonna spiral back up!

I shouldn't have any problems though since my box is already patched up.

With this CPU I oughtta be golden for the next 2-3 years.
