Red Buttons dies

I always loved the stuff he did with John Wayne, like "Hatari" and "The Longest Day".

Ever hear about Red Buttons and John Wayne playing cards while filming Hatari?

Red Buttons was sitting there at the table watching the brush when a leopard came walking out. He kept trying to get John Wayne to look at the leopard, but Wayne kept looking at his cards. Finally when the leopard got close, Red was about to come unglued. He said "Duke, wouldja look at that leopard?" and Wayne looked at him and said "Buttons, go see what he wants!"

You don't. For the most part, today's crop of current actors or stars just aren't in the same league.

There aren't any left like John Wayne, Red Buttons, Robert Mitchum, or their contemporaries.

The bunch today strikes most of us as transparent and single dimensional.

Like Burt Reynolds? You'll love this:

When they were shooting "Deliverance", stunt co-ordinator Hal Needham sent a dummy over the waterfall when Burt's character was supposed to go over after capsizing the canoe in the rapids and getting tossed out. So, after that shot was over, Hal looks at Burt and asked"What'd that look like to you?", and Burt said, "It looked like a dummy going over a waterfall". So Burt did the stunt himself. And, as you see in the movie, Burt went over the watefall and broke his leg in the process. As they loaded him in the ambulance, Burt looked up at Hal and asked, "What'd that look like to you?", and Hal said, "It looked like a dummy going over a waterfall".

So long Red...you'll be sorely missed.

I usually cringed when I saw his name in the credits and then wondered how he gave such a great performance when the film was over.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.
