MALIBU, Calif.  — Mel Gibson issued a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for his drunk driving arrest and saying he has battled alcoholism throughout his life.

Gibson also apologized for what he said were "despicable" statements he made to the deputies who arrested him early Friday morning on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested," he said in a statement issued by his publicist. "I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."

Publicist Alan Nierob declined to elaborate beyond the statement.

Gibson, 50, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol after deputies stopped his 2006 Lexus LS 430 for speeding. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said deputies clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone.

A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, Whitmore said. The legal limit in California is 0.08 percent.

The actor was released early Friday after posting $5,000 bail.

To prevent a thread lockage, I won't post the exact things he said. But let's just say according to the arrest report, Mel has a problem with those of Jewish decent.

Methinks that he not only purchased a ticket for the crazy train - he liked it so much that he bought the company.

A Tom Cruise move, without the hot 15 year old chick.

It's a good thing that he knows exactly where to go for the financing of his next independant movie, because he can kiss movie star life as he knew it goodbye.

I think he's gonna have a hard time getting money from the Weinstein Brothers now.

What gets me is he flipped out and only blew a .12. A .12!!! Heck, I blow a .12 before breakfast.

Passion of the Christ - Traditionally an anti-semitic play.  On its own, nothing, but if he was also making these comments at the arrest, well...  that's not a good combo.

I read those comments in the locked thread.  If true...whoa.  I'd feel sorry for Mad Max but no one put a gun to his head and said, "Drink!".

At least he apologized, kudos for that.  But talk is cheap.

Yep I agree at least he acknowleges there is a problem. That's more than several other celebreties and politicians have done. It remains to be seen as to what he'll do about his problem however.

A drinking problem is one thing.

What he said that night is a whole 'nuther beast and has got nothing to do with a drinking problem.

Really Nash, so the lack of inhibitions from alcohol can't possibly be related to it then. Funny that doesn't seem to pan out with the fair number of drunks I have had the misfortune to deal with.

Of course if all they gave him was ain intoxilyzer test there could be more than one intoxicant involved.

Yes, really.

You're right though - the lack of inhibition was due to the booze.

Just like some girls get completely raunched out after the 8th vodka sev. Or some guys go all Vin Diesel after a coupla Jagermeisters.

But slutty chicks and knuckleheads who get way in over their heads do not, for the most part, start spouting anti-Semitic gibberish.

You're right that the drinkin' has something to do with inhibitions. What those inhibitions were about is what's of note.

I read Xtor's post before Skuzzification and what struck me was the supposed "My life is so ****ed." comment my Mad Max.  I find it hard to sympathise with someone who has no want of anykind.  At least no apparent want but wtf do I know.  And the anti-semitism, errr SUPPOSED anti-semitism, well...let's just say it's going to get verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry interesting over the next few days.  I say he writes a big check, errrrrr donation to B'nai B'rith or some such organization.

The first report I heard was there was a videotaped blood test. If there was more than one substance, we MAY hear about it. There was suppossedly a cover-up attempt made already. Who knows what may or may not be tainted.

We don't know what motivated the remarks or his attatude. He may have been suffering backlash in the industry for TPOTC and that was what he was talking about. Or, he may just be a racist arse.

He's in trouble because of the way he handled the police and for being drunk.  The guy needs help...though I think he was angry about something else and took it out on the cops in a stupid sort of way.  Probably not the best time for him to be pulled over.  He shouldn't have been driving in a condition of anger or intoxication.
