Which processes are causing AH2 to run slow and which ones should I elminate???

I'm running a dual core 64 AMD Windows XP system with 2 GB RAM.

my download speed is around 6800 kbps and upload around 800 kbps. I'm still not sure why AH2 runs so slowly or choppy...

also have ATI's 1300 PCI express 16 video card with 512 MB RAM.

I would start by disabling all automated updates (Windows, AntiVirus, Programs).

Also, there seems to be things like Itunes and other programs running in the background? I would disable all features/programs you dont need regularly. Check your Autostart menu - some programs add themselves there. Also check the options in the programs...

You can get rid of Windows processes that you dont need with programs like XP Anti Spy.




Generally: EVERY unneccessary process makes AH run slow. With that CPU and RAM you got (provided you have a halfway decent GC) AH should run smoothly. But that multitude of processes you have running there is sure to slow you down.

naw, you got plenty of ram...2 gig ram = 512 on the video card.

Do a search here for FSautostart. Its a great program you can use to shut down a lot of stuff that is running on your computer, with out really killing anything. Its easy to use and ya really can't mess it up.

In your list, about 60-70 percent of that stuff is easily turned off and could help performance a bit. Best way to check is to run each xxxx.exe name thru Google to see what it is and weather you should shut it down. I think if you find the info here on the BBS for the FSautostart, it also lists a few places that list programs that you can shut down.

If you still have issues, post a copy of your Dxdiag here and let the "gurus" take a look see. Some drivers while "new" aren't nessisarily better for you.

Looks like you may have an HP machine? You can kill the files starting with HP*.*, the stuff that has "sched" in it (scheduled stuff), the kbd thing looks like Kodak camera stuff, the spool service can go (printer spooler). You should be able to get to less than 20 running processes total.

your video card is the problem.  Its a real low end card.  That card is equal to a Nvidia 5700 as far as performance.  512 megs of ram on video means nothing if u can't push the info through it fast enough.

The ATI x1300 has a memory throughput of 8-12.8 GB/s and a fill rate of 1800-2400 MTexels/s depending if it a standard or pro card.

I have a ati x800xl 256 meg card.  My card is starting to struggle some when in GV's and I have a throughput of 32.00GB/s and fill rate of 6500 MTexels/s.  More then doubled what u have.

A nvidia 5700ultra has a troughput of 14.4 GB/s and fill rate of 1900MTexels/s.

That video card should be more than adequate for AH2.  Not sure why you think otherwise AKDogg?

it will work but u have to turn everything down.  The video card can't handle any detail level.  My son's computer has the 5700 video card which virtually has the same specs.  He has the same problem and he only has 16 processes running.  I have his computer stream lined as much as possible.  All graphic sliders to performance and texture size at 256.

On my machine which has the X800XL, I running 512 textures with 4x AA.  I get about 40-75 in flight.  GV's it drops to about 15-40.

I also have the X800 (PE).  I am able to run full detail on almost everything with good FR.

I have heard the game cares more about RAM and CPU when it comes to details and related performance...

U are correct also but he has a machine more then capable of running this game.  His weak link is the video card.  

Your card for example has a throughput of 35.8GB/s and fill rate of 8320 MTexels/s.  Very nice card.  Ranks up there even with the new generation cards.

 Keep in mind to.  He probably trying to run 512 textures at 1280x1024 res with detail all the way up with that card.  That will choke that card faster then I can say it.

I just bought the card last week from a retailer and it wasn't cheap. I don't understand how it could be a real low end card with PCI express 16 only feature and with 512 MB of memory. From my understanding PCI express 16 is much better than regular PCI.

If u paid more then $120.00 for it u got robbed.  My card cost me $350.00 1.5 yrs ago.  Your top of the line video card which ATI 1950XTX or the Nvidia 7900GX2 go for about $520.00-$650.00 depending where u shop.  Now I not saying u have to spend that much to get good frame rate.  U can get a mid level card like mine for like 170 now I believe.  Trust me when I say, the X1300 is a low level card.  ATI made the card to be affordable for the low budget market.  That card is not for the serious gamer.  It will play 50% of the games on the market at avg FPS (30fps).  

If u can't get a better card then I suggest turning your graphic settings down and use 256 Textures.  The memory on the video card is not the problem.  Its the pipelines that it has to feed the memory the information.  Think of the pipelines as highways.  Your card has 2 pipelines.  that is like a alley.  My X800XL has 6 pipelines to feed the memory.  That is like a interstate highway.  Your top of the line cards have 8+ pipelines.  Obvously the more pipelines u have, the more information u can push through at 1 time.

Geez, yeomanry, you remind me of my dad.  He never met a utility he wouldn't run.  Kill the ehome stuff, all that discgui junk, the itunes stuff, Windows Defender, and you can probably kill all of those ATI programs if you're not running custom color schemes or the like.

When you say AH2 is running slow, do you mean the frame rate is low?  What resolution are you running and which AH2 textures (256, 512, or 1024)?

I have a 2.2 GHz Celeron, 1 GB RAM, and a 5700 Ultra with 256 MB.  There are 20 processes running, including the browser.  I get about 50+ FPS in AH2 at 1280x960 and the 512 bit textures.

the x1300 has 4 pipes, and it is slow. i thought it was cool finding a 512meg  card for AGP but it wasn't worth it. i have to OC the hell out of it just to make it perform like my old sapphire 9600xt ....currently waiting for my new x800xt to show up. ($169 on newegg)
