Fitting lyrics to the new AW folks aboard
« on: November 13, 2001, 07:32:00 PM »
Into the distance a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast
How can I escape this irresistible grasp
Can't keep my eyes from the circling sky
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth bound misfit, I.

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unfaded,empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling sky
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earthbound misfit, I.

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in empty sky
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare to this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling sky
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earthbound misfit, I.

Oh btw...

Quote
On the surface, the song is simply about Gilmour's experiences learning to fly aircraft (he now owns six historic aeroplanes). Anthony Moore was always hard at work, but Gilmour had a habit of showing up late at the studio, and his excuse was all too predictable. Dave would ring in and apologise, "I'm not coming in today, because I'm learning to fly."

In a wider sense, the song was a metaphor for the fact that Gilmour himself was learning to pilot the Floyd. Now in control, he was experiencing a trepidation which he likened to the experience of going up solo in an aircraft. In the middle of the track you can hear Nick Mason, another flyer, going through his pre-flight checks with the control tower.

IMHO not the best PF song and album. After "Dark Side" their music and lyrics became too sombre (maybe a wrong word here). And after Waters left them - it became an ordinary "pop"  :(

I have heard that Gilmour and Mason recorded "Momentary Lapse" only because they ran out of money. And they didn't include Wright into the band, his name is mentioned on the cover as one of the "session musicians", because he had nothing to invest into the project!

When they were in Moscow in 1989 - it was unbelievable, it was next to impossible to buy tickets. I was stunned by the performance, it was my first real rock concert. Maybe the first real rock concert in USSR. But without Roger it was not the same band...

They made 10 concerts in Moscow, 5 days, two shows a day... The first and only band that came here to make TEN concerts at one place. Frankly speaking - good old Deep Purple, performing at a hockey palace are much more fun. It is a real show without any special effects like PF or Rolling Stones.Just a band on the scene...

And If I'll have to choose a PF theme for online sims - I'll prefer "Point me at the Sky"  :)
